Fugitive is caught in traffic arrest
Police said the fugitive ran because he'd seen his photo in the newspaper.
YOUNGSTOWN -- "Fugitive of the Week" Gregory Weidner chose the wrong traveling companion.
Weidner, 19, of East Midlothian Boulevard, was a passenger in a car driven by 20-year-old John Moore of Clinton Avenue -- whose license is under suspension. Police said he has eight open license suspensions.
Members of the Street Crimes Unit patrolling the North Side said they pursued the car Monday evening after the driver, later identified as Moore, failed to signal a turn onto Kensington Street. The car appeared to speed up as police approached but then pulled over near Tod Avenue, reports show.
The passenger, later identified as Weidner, jumped out and ran into a wooded area off Kensington.
Detective Sgt. Kevin Mercer gave chase, watching Weidner (aka Mo Mo) fall over a log, run over a small hill into a gully and fall again over a large tree branch before surrendering. Weidner told Mercer that he ran because he'd seen himself featured Sunday in The Vindicator as the FBI/Mahoning Valley Violent Crimes Task Force fugitive of the week.
Weidner was being sought on an aggravated-burglary charge.
What was found
Police said Weidner had $245 in his pants pocket and that bags of crack cocaine were found where he first fell on the log. Inside the car, police said they found more crack and an unloaded .38-caliber revolver under the passenger seat.
Weidner was arrested on the aggravated burglary warrant and new charges of carrying a concealed weapon and two counts of possession of drugs. At arraignment Tuesday in municipal court, bond was set at $155,000 and a preliminary hearing for May 9.
Moore was issued a traffic citation at the scene of the traffic stop. He failed to show for arraignment Tuesday in municipal court, and a warrant was issued, the clerk of court's office said.
