COLLEGE GOLF YSU teams finish second at Horizon tournaments
Senior Nate Komsa led the Penguins to their best finish in the event.
CARMEL, Ind. -- The Youngstown State men's golf team shot the best round of the day on Tuesday to earn its best finish at the league meet.
The Penguins came in second at the Horizon League Championships, five shots behind Cleveland State, which won its first conference crown since 1998.
YSU golfers shot a two-under par 285 counting a 68, 72, 72 and 73 toward its team total.
The Penguins, who were fourth after the first two rounds, were able to overtake Detroit and Loyola to place second. The Titans and Ramblers tied for third, two shots behind the Penguins.
Best finish
It was the best finish for the program since a second-place performance at the 2000 Mid-Continent Conference Championships. In four prior league championships, YSU was fifth once and sixth three times.
Cleveland State won with an 858 after carding a 293. The Vikings had rounds of 280 and 285 on Monday and led the Penguins by 13 strokes.
Leading the way for YSU was freshman Ryan Stocke who shot a 68 in a round that included five birdies, an eagle on the first hole and three bogeys.
Stocke finished 12th overall with a 217 (one-over par) after carding scores of 75 and 74 on the first day.
Senior Nate Komsa was the top finisher for the Penguins coming in sixth. Komsa was three-under par for the tournament with rounds of 72, 69 and 72 to finish with a 213.
Junior Jim Powers finished at one under-par with a three-round total of 215. Powers finished with an even-par 72 after rounds of 69 and 74.
Senior Josh Zarlenga finished tied for 19th with a six-over par 222 for the tournament. He had a 73 after rounds of 78 and 81. Junior Kyle Romig tied for 25th with a 227 (11-over par). Romig had a 79 after finishing with a 78 and a 70.
Women
The Youngstown State women's golf team also finished second at the 2006 Horizon League Women's Golf Championships. Butler won the team title for the second consecutive year while taking the top four individual finishes.
The Penguins finished with a three-round score of 979 after firing a 326. The Bulldogs ran away with the team crown finishing with an impressive three-round total of 936.
Sophomore Brittany Jones was YSU's top finisher placing fifth with a 241. Jones had a round of 80 after opening the tournament with an 84 and a 77.
YSU sophomore Adrianna DiLonardo finished tied for sixth with a 242 in her first appearance at the league tournament. DiLonardo finished the tournament with an 82 following rounds of 81 and 79.
Bonnie Sherman saved her best performance of the tournament for her final round. Sherman shot an 80 on Tuesday and finished tied for 13th with a 250 for the championship.
Tying Sherman for 13th place was YSU junior Felicia Ciotola. Ciotola finished with a round of 86 after rounds of 84 and 80 on the first day.
Freshman Amanda Brindley also had her best round of the tournament on Tuesday. Brindley carded an 84 and finished tied for 19th with a 265 for the event. She had rounds of 94 and 87 for the Penguins.
