Ursuline girls teamto be honored
YOUNGSTOWN -- Ursuline High School will honor the girls basketball team Thursday with a banquet at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Center in Austintown at 6 p.m.
Girard girl to singnational anthem
GIRARD -- Gina Martini, an 11-year-old fifth-grade student at Girard Intermediate School, will sing the national anthem at Jacobs Field on May 17 before the Cleveland Indians play the Kansas City Royals. This appearance will be Gina's fifth at a Cleveland sports event.
Carr named
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Ryan Carr, a senior pitcher for the Grove City College baseball team from Mohawk High, was named Presidents' Athletic Conference pitcher of the week.
Carr pitched a three-hitter over the distance and didn't give up any earned runs while striking out five, to lead the Wolverines to a 10-1 win with over Westminster on April 29. He improved his record to 6-2. Brad Thoma of Thomas More was named hitter of the week by batting .500 (7-for-14) to lead the Saints to a 3-1 record.
Newton Fallsplayer signs
NEW TON FALLS -- Casee Piquet recently signed a national letter of intent to continue her softball career at Gannon University in Erie, Pa.
A four-year starter for the Tigers' varsity team, Piquet has played travel ball with Maddogs of Alliance and Valley Extreme of Cortland.
She plans to major in sports exercise and science, with a minor in coaching, with hopes of becoming a trainer.
CANTON -- The Pro Football Hall of Fame has announced that a very limited number of sideline tickets for the 2006 AFC-NFC Hall of Fame Game featuring the Oakland Raiders and Philadelphia Eagles will be made available for sale to the public on May 10.
Tickets may be purchased online by visiting the Pro Football Hall of Fame's website at Profootballhof.com or by calling 1-800-913-9788 beginning at 11 a.m.
The cost is $45 per ticket. There is a limit of six tickets per household. All tickets are non-refundable and will be mailed on June 30.
The 2006 Hall of Fame Game will be televised nationally by NBC on Aug. 6 at 8 p.m. from Fawcett Stadium.
Scholarships awarded
YOUNGSTOWN -- Ten area athletes have been awarded Mahoning Valley Coaches Association $250 scholarships to continue their athletic-educational careers at college.
Anthony Berdis, a basketball-baseball player who carries a 4.0 grade point average at Fitch High School, plans to attend Youngstown State or Mount Union. Danielle Daltorio, who competed in volleyball, basketball and track and has a 3.8 GPA at Mooney, plans to attend the University of Akron in the fall. John Dohar, a member of the bowling team who has a 3.1 GPA at Boardman, plans to attend YSU or Kent State in the fall.
Amy Dolsak, a four-year letterwinner in basketball, tennis and track with a 3.947 GPA, will attend Westminster or Mount Union. Jared Hideg, a four-year letterman in wrestling with a 3.2 GPA, at Liberty, plans to attend YSU in the fall to be an air traffic controller. Kelsey Hulea, a cross country runner and football statistician for four years with a 3.7 GPA for Poland, plans to attend YSU. Jake Kampfer, a four-year lettermen with a 2.8 GPA at Leetonia, will attend Hannah E. Mullins School of Nursing in the fall.
John Matisi, a four-year letter winner in football, two-year letter winner in basketball and a member of the marching band, concert band, jazz band and Spanish club, has a 4.0 GPA at Lowellville. He plans to attend Michigan.
Danielle Pavlansky, a member of the tennis, basketball teams with a 3.75 GPA at Canfield, will attend Penn State.
Dave Pavlansky is number-one in his class at South Range with a 4.0 GPA. He also was band president, a member of student council, marching band, jazz band and National Honor Society. He plans to attend Ohio Northern, Miami or Kenyon.

* AUSTINTOWN -- The annual meeting of the United States Bowling Congress' Youngstown youth association will be May 18 at Wedgewood Lanes.
All sanctioned youth over the age of 14 are invited, along with parents, coaches, proprietors and youth board members.
