WARREN Bank files foreclosure suit against community center
The bank seeks 18 percent interest on the debt.
WARREN -- Sky Bank has filed a $288,766 foreclosure suit against the closed Rebecca Williams Community Center, which the bank says defaulted on a mortgage for its education building at 421 Main Ave. S.W.
The financially ailing 81-year-old center closed abruptly and laid off its staff last September. The mortgage debt, dating back to Aug. 3, 2000, is for the renovated former hardware store the center began using as its education building five years ago when the center outgrew its club building at 760 Main Ave. S.W.
The bank is asking that the building be sold and the proceeds applied toward payment of the debt, which was incurred in a transaction between the center and Second National Bank -- a predecessor to Sky Bank.
Sky Bank is also seeking to collect an additional $49,769 it says the center owes based on an Aug. 22, 2003, promissory note executed by the center.
In addition the bank seeks 18 percent interest on the debts retroactive to March and payment of the bank's attorney fees.
Court
The case is assigned to Judge Andrew Logan of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court.
The center's club building, which isn't mentioned in the suit, is to be reopened in June by the United Methodist Community Center of Youngstown, initially for an eight-week youth and senior citizen summer program.
Warren City Council approved last week the transfer of $14,256 in unspent 2005 Community Development Block grant funds from Rebecca Williams to UMCC to fund the reopening.
UMCC has said it intends to continue programming at the club after the summer activities end.
