OSHP, AUSTINTOWN POLICE Niles man is 'critical' after chase, rollover
The chase went on for about eight miles.
AUSTINTOWN -- A man was in critical condition in St. Elizabeth Health Center Monday after a police chase that ended with a rollover.
Charges are pending from Austintown police and the Ohio State Highway Patrol against Andrew Konsol III, 32, of Ohltown-McDonald Road in Niles, said Austintown Police Chief Bob Gavalier.
Konsol was injured during the chase Sunday morning that began at 1:21 a.m. at National City Bank, 4949 Mahoning Ave.
Austintown police assisted the OSHP's Canfield Post in the chase, which went on for about eight miles.
Austintown police reported that officer Greg Brinsko went to the bank to help the patrol with a traffic stop.
Konsol, driving a white Tracker, had an active warrant for his arrest, the police report states.
Brinsko said that when he got to the bank, he saw that the trooper was searching the car, and heard the sound of a stun gun. He saw the trooper and Konsol struggle, and heard the trooper tell Konsol to get out of the car and hand over the keys.
What happened
The struggle went on; then Brinsko heard the Tracker start up. Police said that as Konsol began to flee, the trooper hit him in the face with pepper spray. It didn't stop him, the report states.
Konsol drove south on Westchester Drive, then turned onto Idaho Road. Near Woodhurst Boulevard, Brinsko was able to get in front of him to slow him down, but Konsol turned into Frank Ohl Middle School's property, went through the grass and back onto Idaho, going north, the report states.
Police threw a stop stick, which punctures tires so that they slowly release air without causing a driver to lose control, Gavalier said.
Konsol ran over it and kept going, the report states. Brinsko tried to get in front of Konsol again, but Konsol's vehicle swerved and hit the cruiser on the passenger side, the report states.
The chase went on through several more side streets until Konsol drove onto New Road, then north on Route 46 to Interstate 80 east and then to Route 11 south, police said.
On the approach to Mahoning Avenue, Brinsko was again able to get in front of Konsol, the report said. But Konsol didn't slow down, and was on the right side of the cruiser. OSHP's report said Konsol was on the berm, and Brinsko's cruiser was in the right lane. Konsol swerved toward Brinsko again, reports state.
Konsol hit the front bumper of the cruiser, which had slowed down. He lost control of the Tracker and slid to the left, then to the right of the road. The vehicle flipped several times, and Konsol was thrown out.
Earlier reports incorrectly indicated that Brinsko's vehicle hit Konsol's.
Gavalier said Konsol is wanted on fraud charges, a felony, but he was not sure what jurisdiction issued the warrant. A search of Mahoning County court records showed no open cases for him.
