Niles goes to 7-1 in MAC with win over Struthers



Canfield was beaten by the state's top Division II team, Walsh Jesuit, 4-3.
NILES -- Niles High scored nine runs in the first inning Monday and went on to defeat Struthers, 11-1, in a Metro Athletic Conference baseball game.
Sean Cleary doubled and singled for Niles (15-2, 7-1 MAC), while Matt Vince singled twice. Brian Bianco also doubled and had two RBIs.
Anthony Ragozine scattered four hits and struck out seven in a five-inning complete-game performance.
Chris Kadvan doubled twice for Struthers.
Walsh Jesuit 4, Canfield 3
KENT -- Kyle Banna had two hits included a double, but it wasn't enough for Canfield against the top-ranked Division II team in the state.
Banna scored two of Canfield's (14-5) three runs. Joe Fox also doubled for the Cardinals.
Walsh Jesuit is 18-2.
Poland 12, Salem 3
POLAND -- Frank LaRubbia's three hits drove in two runs for the Bulldogs in the MAC game. Jim Petrolla, Mark Turnbull and Mike White each had two hits. One of Petrolla's was a double.
For the Quakers, David Wright homered and doubled.
Springfield 3, Mineral Ridge 1
MINERAL RIDGE -- John Houser (5-1) pitched a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts for the Tigers (16-5, 10-1 Inter-County League).
Dane Dobson singled twice and Houser had an RBI double for the Tigers.
The Rams (6-11) tied the score at 1 in the fourth inning before surrendering two runs in the sixth.
McDonald 6, South Range 2
NORTH LIMA -- Steven Hughes pitched a two-hitter with seven strikeouts and three walks.
Hughes also had a double, two singles and three runs scored to spark McDonald (12-7, 9-3 ICL). Hughes is now 6-2.
Paul Logar hit a two-run double to highlight a three-run seventh inning that enabled the Blue Devils to pad their 3-2 lead to 6-2.
Jackson-Milton 10,Lowellville 9
NORTH JACKSON -- Doubles by Mike Nagy and Nick Serb helped lead the Bluejays. Matt Shields' three hits brought home two runs.
For the Rockets, Ryan Gruber tripled and Vince Travaline doubled.
Maplewood 11, Lordstown 5
LORDSTOWN -- Craig Clemson (5-2) scattered seven hits with five strikeouts to pick up the win for Maplewood.
He also hit a pair of doubles, while Jared Partridge hit a home run and single for the Rockets (9-4, 8-3 Northeastern Athletic Conference).
The Red Devils (2-11, 2-7 NAC) were led by Bob Gibson who hit a double and single.
Mathews 6, Badger 5
KINSMAN -- Ben Mackall had a two-run homer and single and three RBIs for Mathews (10-8, 10-2 NAC), which rallied from a 5-4 deficit with two runs in the top of the seventh to win.
Justin Deraway's RBI double in the sixth had given Badger (8-3 NAC) a 5-4 lead.
Aaron Cyphert had two singles and one RBI for Mathews.
Marcus Heath and Jake Dunbar had two singles each for Badger.
Torin Brown got the mound win in relief. Marcus Heath took the loss in relief, striking out six.
Ledgemont 11, Youngstown Christian 0
STRUTHERS -- Mark Warmeling collected three singles, two RBIs and scored twice to lead Ledgemont (12-4, 6-0 East Suburban Conference).
The Eagles (5-8, 0-6) were held to four singles by Andy Humar (2-0).
Crestview 7, Columbiana 2
COLUMBIANA -- Craig Schmidt pitched a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts and three walks to lead Crestview (13-5, 7-4 Tri-County League).
Greg Brown socked a two-run homer while Corey Hill had two singles and two RBIs and Colby Henderson three singles and one RBI to also lead Crestview.
Bill Sattler and Pat Sposato each had one RBI for Columbiana (10-12, 7-4).
