NFL ROUNDUP \ News and notes
Packers: Free agent cornerback Charles Woodson signed a multi-year contract Monday. The team didn't release any financial details in announcing the signing. But Woodson's agent, Kevin Poston, said last Wednesday that the Packers agreed to a seven-year deal for $52.7 million, including $10.5 million in the first year. The 6-foot-1, 208-pound Woodson, a four-time Pro Bowler, has played eight seasons for the Oakland Raiders, intercepting 17 passes in 106 games. He hasn't played a full season since 2001 and broke his right leg Oct. 23 against Buffalo. The Raiders declined to use their franchise tag on Woodson in February, making him an unrestricted free agent. The Packers also released punter Ryan Flinn, kicker Rhys Lloyd, wide receiver Willie Quinnie and linebacker Robert Thomas.
Rams: Signing the son of actor Denzel Washington ensured St. Louis of making a splash the day after the NFL draft ended. John David Washington, a 5-foot-10, 200-pound running back was among 10 undrafted players signed by the Rams. He played for Division II Morehouse College last year. Washington had a school-record 1,198 yards with a 5.6-yard average and nine touchdowns, and added 10 receptions for 69 yards is senior year. He also ended his career as the school's single-game (242 yards) and career (3,699) leading rusher. The Rams also signed kicker Josh Cummings of Pittsburgh, centers Mike Degory of Florida and Donovan Raiola of Wisconsin, tight end Jonathan Williams of New Hampshire, running back Antoine Bagwell of California (Pa.), defensive end Kory Lothe of Eastern Illinois, defensive tackle Tim Sandidge of Virginia Tech and wide receiver Clinton Solomon of Iowa.
Patriots: With the NFL draft over, 43-year-old Doug Flutie plans to announce this week if he will end a career that included a Heisman Trophy and took him through three pro football leagues. "He still has not made a decision," Kristen Kuliga, his agent, said. "He's weighing all his options. I think he'll be deciding later this week." Flutie, a backup, wanted to wait until the draft ended Sunday before deciding, she said. He has been in contact with the team in recent months and "has leaned a couple of ways, but the latest is, he hasn't made a decision," Kuliga said. Flutie played sparingly in five games last season and completed 5 of 10 passes for 29 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions. After winning the Heisman at Boston College in 1984, he played in the U.S. Football League, the Canadian Football League and with Buffalo, Chicago, San Diego and New England in the NFL.
Giants: Jai Lewis, who helped George Mason's basketball team reach the Final Four, has signed as a free agent. Lewis, who is listed at 6-foot-7, 275 pounds, is projected by NFL scouts as a defensive lineman or tight end. He played defensive tackle, tight end and fullback in high school. Lewis scored 20 points in George Mason's 86-84 upset win over Connecticut in the regional final.
