Orchestra to perform for students

Thousands of young people will hear the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra.
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Symphony Orchestra will perform four concerts for area students over a two-day period next month at the Edward W. Powers Auditorium.
The annual Young People's Concerts are being planned by the Women's Committee for Children's Concerts and will be performed at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. April 6 and 7.
"The Beat Goes On" is the theme for the concerts, which will focus on rhythm and will feature student participation.
Isaiah Jackson will be making his final appearance as director of the orchestra, and Heidi Fromm will provide the narration during the performances.
The audience
Students in grades 4 through 8 from public, parochial, private and charter schools and those who are homeschooled are invited. More than 8,000 students from Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana and Portage counties in Ohio and Mercer and Lawrence counties in Pennsylvania are expected to participate.
The women's committee has compiled a study guide handbook and CD of the concert selections for classroom instructors. The guides contain information about the composers and their music.
In conjunction with the concerts, the students are taking part in an art competition with pictures to be based on the concert theme. Following judging, the winning entries will be displayed in the DeYor Performing Arts Centre.
