Council mulls naming field after Marine

NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- City council is considering naming a baseball field in honor of Marine Cpl. Albert P. Gettings, who died in Iraq earlier this year.
Council recently discussed naming the field at Gunton Park on the North Hill in remembrance of Gettings, who played baseball for New Castle High School and who lived on the North Hill. The 27-year-old died in January after being hit by sniper fire while leading a patrol in Fallujah.
Councilwoman Christine Sands explained that several of Gettings' neighbors approached her about memorializing him. She said that because Gettings was a baseball fan it would be appropriate to name a ball field in his honor and to place a plaque or nameplate at the field.
To accomplish this, council must adopt an ordinance to officially name the field. Council intends to vote on whether to adopt such as measure next month. A dedication for the field could be scheduled for later this spring if council passes the ordinance, Sands said.
