Fire damages house
YOUNGSTOWN -- A fire at 160 W. Boston Ave. probably started near the rear entrance of the vacant two-story house, the fire department said. Crews sent to the fire around 10:10 p.m. Wednesday said flames spread down the first floor hallway and up to the second floor. Damage was listed as $2,500. The cause remains under investigation. County records describe the structure as a 15-room duplex built in 1923 and valued at $7,600. It is owned by a Lowellville man.
Chemical addiction board
YOUNGSTOWN -- Jerry Carter, Executive Director of Neil Kennedy Recovery Clinic, has been elected chairman of the Ohio Chemical Dependency Professionals Board. The board has 13 members, 12 appointed by the Governor and one designated from the Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services to serve as an ex-officio member.
The board regulates the license and certification process, issues and renews licenses and certificates, and investigates ethical complaints.
Carter, a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, has been NKRC executive director since 1977. He is active in numerous professional organizations and is on the faculty of Youngstown State University, where he teaches a master's level course in chemical dependency counseling. He and his wife live in Youngstown.
MammoVan screenings
YOUNGSTOWN -- The MammoVan, a mobile mammography unit, will offer breast screenings to income-eligible Mahoning Valley women beginning at 10 a.m. Monday at the YWCA, 25 W. Rayen Ave.
Financial assistance may be available for those who qualify. Free transportation to the screening, sponsored by the YWCA's ENCOREplus breast cancer awareness program, is available by appointment only. Call (330) 746-6361 for eligibility requirements and to schedule an appointment.
Teen's drug charges
CAMPBELL -- An 18-year-old Reed Avenue man was scheduled to appear in municipal court this morning on several drug charges, including abuse, possession and aggravated trafficking.
Police on patrol spotted the suspect, Aaron T. Profanchik, at the corner of Jean and Jackson Streets at 9:45 p.m. Wednesday. Knowing that Profanchik had a warrant for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, the police arrested and searched him.
Police said that during the search they found three clear plastic bags in his right pants pocket. Two contained 2.3 grams and 7 grams of suspected crack cocaine, and the third contained 2.8 grams of suspected marijuana. Police also found $315 in cash on Profanchik. Profanchik was held in Campbell City Jail until his arraignment today.
Party store break-in
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 17-year-old boy was found hiding in the bathroom ceiling at Conroy's Party Shop on Glenwood Avenue around 12:10 a.m. Thursday when police responded to a break-in call. The boy was taken to the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center to face a charge of breaking and entering, police said. Police said the drive-through window was broken.
Shots fired at house
YOUNGSTOWN -- At least three shots were fired at a house in the 40 block of North Pearl Street around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, police said. Two women at the house said they heard one shot, glass breaking and then more shots. One of the women, who was pushed to the floor by her friend, said she heard a bullet zip past her head as she fell to the bedroom floor. The resident told police that this is the second time her house has been shot up. An ex-boyfriend is listed on the report as a suspect.
