Guilty of 1 of 2 counts
LISBON -- A Columbiana County Common Pleas Court jury found a man guilty Wednesday of one count of having sex with a minor but innocent on a second, identical charge involving the same girl.
Joseph E. Peterson, 29, of North Elm Street, was indicted in May 2005 on two counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor. Authorities said he had sex with the girl in March and April 2005.
Timothy McNicol, the assistant prosecutor who tried the case, said the girl consented to the sex. He said he had not talked to the jurors about their split decision.
Peterson could get probation or a sentence of up to five years in prison. Sentencing will be at a later date.
Sewer project on track
WINONA -- The Winona sewer project is back on track after Columbiana County was able to get $700,000 in additional funding.
The Columbiana County commissioners signed agreements Wednesday to get the extra funds from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's rural development program.
The county had awarded the contract last year to DiPietro Excavating Inc. in East Canton. But officials discovered their funding package was short of the $2.1 million cost.
The state Environmental Protection Agency had ordered the county to install the system. Waste will be piped to the county's treatment plant near Guilford Lake.
About 123 homes in the Winona area will connect to the new lines. The work is expected to be completed by next spring.

Hausch was charged last August with setting fire to a rental house at 116 Tod Lane, from which a woman he knew had been evicted. Hausch was treated for burns at Akron Children's Hospital burn unit.
