CAMPBELL SCHOOLS | Board meeting Campbell Schools Board of Education met Monday at Memorial High School and took these actions:

Approved a request from Dr. Robert Walls, elementary principal, and the elementary teaching staff to change a policy on kindergarten and first-grade entrance requirements. To start school, pupils must meet age requirements for each grade with birthdays in that year no later than Aug. 1 rather than Sept. 30. Superintendent Thomas Robey said, however, that parents will have the right to appeal the policy if they think younger children are ready to enter school.
Approved the school calendar for the 2006-07 school year. The first and last days for pupils are Aug. 30, 2006, and June 7, 2007, respectively.
Approved the 2006 summer school program for pupils in grades two through eight at a maximum cost of $16,000, funded through an intervention grant. The program will be June 12-30 for a maximum of 120 pupils, eight teachers, two educational assistants and two bus drivers.
Approved retirement resignations of Josephine Galletta -- effective July 1 -- and Mark Kunicki -- effective June 30. Galletta, a high school language arts teacher, has taught in the district 35 years. Kunicki, a middle school science teacher, has taught in the district five years.
Set a board work session for 6:30 p.m. April 4 to discuss negotiations procedures and expectations.
Set the next regular board meeting for 6:30 p.m. April 26.
The board also discussed staffing for the 2006-07 school year. Robey said the high school home economics teacher and high school librarian who are retiring will not be replaced, leaving one home economics teacher for the high school and one librarian responsible for all libraries in the district. An additional instructional aide will be hired for the libraries. The high school language arts teaching position vacated by retirement will be filled and additional language arts teacher will be hired for media and technology, including television production. The intent is to strengthen language arts in speech, debate and drama areas, Robey said.
