Authorities capture fugitive

YOUNGSTOWN -- Derrick D. Slocum, featured three times as a fugitive of the week in The Vindicator since March 2003, has been caught again.
Slocum's photo and description were published Monday in the newspaper as the U.S. marshals most-wanted fugitive. He was being sought on a Boardman burglary charge that resulted in an indictment in May 2005 in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court.
Members of the Street Crimes Unit, acting on a tip, went to 2804 Hudson Ave. on Monday evening. They found Slocum, 40, of Brooklyn Avenue, sitting at the kitchen table.
He was taken to the Mahoning County Jail pending a hearing in common pleas court on the burglary charge.
Police said they found nine various styles of suspected crack pipes in Slocum's pockets as well as suspected crack cocaine and utensils used for crack smoking. The drug-related charges were not filed in municipal court.

Vindicator files show Slocum was the FBI/Mahoning Valley Violent Crimes Task Force fugitive of the week in March 2003. He was wanted on an aggravated-robbery charge. He was the task force's fugitive of the week again in November 2005, charged with burglary and aggravated robbery.
Records show these common pleas convictions for Slocum:
September 2003, indicted on a Youngstown charge of breaking and entering. He pleaded guilty two months later and was sentenced to six months in jail with credit for roughly half that time already spent in jail.
February 2001, indicted on a Canfield charge of burglary. The charge was later reduced to breaking and entering, and he pleaded guilty. He was sentenced to eight months in jail in June 2001 and given credit for six months already served.
