Michigan St. survives, tops Kentucky, 67-63

ROSEMONT, Ill. -- After all the missed shots, Michigan State hung on.
The Spartans withstood a late-game scoring drought by holding Kentucky scoreless for more than five minutes, and beat the Wildcats 67-63 on Monday in the second round of the NCAA tournament.
Fourth-seeded Michigan State, last season's national runner-up, plays the winner of tonight's Duke-Southern California game in the round of 16 in Bridgeport, Conn..
Aisha Jefferson led Michigan State with 16 points -- 14 in the first half -- and Liz Shimek scored 12 points on 4-for-13 shooting -- after scoring 27 in the opening round against Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Her basket with 4:20 remaining gave the Spartans the lead for good, 62-60.
Fifth-seeded Kentucky's drought ended when Carly Ormerod hit a 3-pointer with 4.4 seconds to go to cut Michigan State's lead to 66-63. She finished with a team-high 15 points.
Victoria Lucas-Perry scored 13 for Michigan State, hitting the tying 3-pointer with just over five minutes left and converting 3-of-4 free throws in the final 16 seconds to wrap up the win.
Jenny Pfeiffer scored 12 for Kentucky.
North Carolina 89, Vanderbilt 70
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- North Carolina made playing at home little advantage for Vanderbilt.
Ivory Latta scored 27 points, and the top-ranked and top-seeded Tar Heels tuned out the pro Vandy crowd.
With the victory, the Tar Heels (31-1) reached the regional semifinals for a second straight year and the 10th in their last 12 tournament appearances. Sunday in Cleveland, they will play either Purdue or UCLA, who meet tonight.
North Carolina advanced in style by winning its first two games on the road for only the second time in school history. The Tar Heels won their first two games in 2002 in Santa Barbara.
Carla Thomas led Vanderbilt (21-11) with 17 points. Caroline Williams and Nicole Jules each added 11.
Oklahoma 86, BYU 70
DENVER -- Courtney Paris had 30 points and 15 rebounds to lift Oklahoma over Brigham Young.
The second-seeded Sooners won their 19th straight and Paris, the 6-foot-4 freshman, had already recorded her 27th straight double-double at halftime.
The win moves Oklahoma (31-4) to the San Antonio Regional semifinals, the first time coach Sherri Coale's team has been there since 2002. The Sooners will play the winner of the game between Stanford and Florida State, which was completed in time for today's edition.
Ambrosia Anderson had 16 points for seventh-seeded BYU (26-6) in her last college game, played up the road from her hometown of Colorado Springs.
Baylor 87, New Mexico 67
TUCSON, Ariz. -- Sophia Young scored 21 points and third-seeded Baylor beat No. 11 seed New Mexico.
The defending NCAA champion Lady Bears (26-6) advanced to Saturday's semifinals of the Albuquerque Regional. They will play the winner of tonight's second-round game between second-seeded Maryland and No. 7 seed St. John's in University Park, Pa.
Sophomore forward Dionne Marsh led the Lobos (22-10) with 25 points.
