CINCINNATI -- YSU did all of its scoring in three innings, including plating five runs in the seventh, en route to an 11-7 victory over Xavier in game one of a three-series Friday.
Brent Parks doubled twice, and Lou Gattozzi, Erich Diedrich and Brandon Caipen homered for the Penguins (4-9), who have won three of four.
YSU starter Lucas Engle earned his first win after allowing six runs on 10 hits in six innings. Joe Antinone and Andy Svitak threw scoreless innings of relief.
Xavier (5-12) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first after four of its first five batters hit safely, and Xavier starter Mike Creevy appeared to be cruising after allowing only two hits in the first four innings.
YSU tied the score in the fifth on Gattozzi's two-run homer and a sacrifice fly from Diedrich, but Xavier's Matt Waskerwitz hit a two-run home run as part of a three-run sixth that put the Musketeers up 6-3.
The Penguins answered with five runs in the next half-inning on three hits and an error to take the lead at 8-6. After an RBI single from Gattozzi and an RBI groundout from Caipen, Parks hit a two-out, two-run double and Josh Page hit an RBI single.
Diedrich homered to right to start the ninth, and Caipen hit a two-run bomb to left center three batters later to give YSU a five-run cushion at 11-6. Jordan Wolf hit a leadoff homer in the bottom of the ninth to end the scoring. The teams play at 1 p.m. today.

Fishing tournament
NILES - A spring fishing tournament will be held at noon April 2, along Mosquito Creek across from Niles McKinley High School. Winners in various categories such as first fish caught and biggest fish caught will receive trophies, cash and lures from the G & amp;L Lure Co. SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Shawn Lutz has been promoted to defensive coordinator at Slippery Rock University.
A member of the Rock coaching staff the past 10 years, he succeeds Jay Foster, who was recently named as coach at Clarion University.
Grove City swimmersnamed All-America
MINNEAPOLIS -- Five members of the Grove City College men's swimming and diving team earned All-America honors at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships.
Grove City's 200 free relay team of sophomore Caleb Courage, senior Ben Haring, freshman Drew Snyder and freshman Tim Whitbeck placed second in the championship final with a Grove City-record time of 1 minute, 21.99 seconds.
Courage, Haring, Whitbeck and freshman Mitch Young posted a time of 1:22.32 in Thursday morning's preliminaries. Snyder, Whitbeck and Young all earned their first NCAA All-America citation by participating in the relay. Their inclusion brings the total of Grove City men's swimming and diving All-Americans to 49.
Courage earned his fourth career All-America honor Thursday night by placing third in the 50 free with a time of 20.63. Haring earned Honorable Mention All-America recognition by tying for 15th place (21.25).
Grove City closed Thursday night's finals by taking 16th in the 400 medley relay. By placing in the top 16, Grove City earned Honorable Mention All-America. Haring, Snyder, Whitbeck and Young combined for a time of 3:44.97. For Haring, it is his fourth All-America honor.
Blase to competein indoor state meet
BOARDMAN -- Boardman senior Lauren Blase will compete in the 4x800-meter relay and the 3200 at the Ohio indoor state championships at the University of Akron.

Steelers' re-signDeshea Townsend
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers re-signed cornerback Deshea Townsend, giving him a four-year contract.
Townsend, 30, has played eight seasons for the Steelers, who drafted him in the fourth round out of Alabama in 1998.
Townsend has started the past season-and-a-half at cornerback for the Steelers and has 141/2 sacks and 14 interceptions for his career. He was the last unrestricted free-agent starter the Steelers needed to sign.
"We're really pleased that Deshea is going to be back with us," Steelers owner Dan Rooney said. "He's like the quarterback back in the defense."
The deal is reportedly worth up to $8 million.
Browns moves
CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Browns cut defensive lineman Amon Gordon, long snapper Jody Littleton and offensive lineman Lewis Dawson on Friday.
Gordon was a fifth-round selection in the 2004 draft. He played six games during his rookie season and had 10 tackles. He missed last season with a knee injury.
Littleton joined the Browns last season, replacing injured long snapper Ryan Pontbriand for the final five games.
Dawson never played for the Browns. He spent the 2004 season on the practice squad and missed last season with a knee injury.
