Robbery suspect is arrested
Robbers reportedly took money and OxyContin pills from a woman.
AUSTINTOWN -- Police have arrested a woman on drug charges and will investigate whether she was involved in a robbery in the Kmart parking lot on Mahoning Avenue.
The crime happened around 8 p.m. Thursday as the victims, a woman and her 10-year-old daughter, were walking to their van with their purchases.
The victim told Austintown police that two women came quickly toward them. One woman pushed her daughter to the ground then grabbed the victim's purse, a police report says. The purse contained 87 OxyContin pills and $450.
The victim told police the robbers ran toward a car parked about 50 feet away and fled east on Mahoning.
Boardman police met the victim at around 11:30 p.m. across from the Boardman Inn on Market Street at Austintown police's request, according to a Boardman police report.
Suspects located
The victim indicated that she knew one of the suspects and that they were staying at the hotel, the report said.
The officers went to the suspects' room and found that the people inside matched the description of the women involved in the robbery, the report said.
The women denied being in Austintown that night, the report said.
The report said one of the women, Danielle Short, 31, of West Warren Avenue, Youngstown, gave police 21 OxyContin pills that she said had been given to her by an unidentified man who said he stole them from the victim. She said they were given to her as payment to keep quiet about the theft.
Police charged Short with drug abuse, a felony, and she is to appear for arraignment at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday in Mahoning County Court, Boardman.
Boardman police did not charge the other woman.
There was no information available from Austintown police on whether charges have been filed against either suspect in Austintown, and there is no record in Mahoning County Court, Austintown, of either suspect having charges filed against them for the robbery.
