WARREN -- The Howland Community Church Cooperative Preschool, 198 Niles Cortland Road S.E., Warren, is registering children for the 2006-07 school year. Classes for 3- and 4-year-old children are held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9:15 to 11:30 a.m. or 12:45 to 3 p.m. To enroll, children must be at least 3 years old by Sept. 30 and potty trained. A prekindergarten class is available for children who will be 5 years old and not planning to enter kindergarten in September. Art recognition
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Steel Valley Art Teachers Association will hold the opening of the 16th Annual Elementary Art Recognition Program from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Butler Institute of American Art, 524 Wick Ave. The event honors elementary art students from Trumbull, Mahoning and Columbiana counties. There will be an award ceremony at 1 p.m., and the reception is free and open to the public.
3 in geography contest
YOUNGSTOWN -- Three area school pupils have qualified to participate in the state competition of the National Geographic Bee scheduled for March 31 at Ohio State University's Mansfield Campus. Shane W. Conway, a sixth-grader at St. Christine School; Brian P. Yauger, a fourth-grader at Emerson Elementary School in Warren; and Mario A. Leone, an eighth-grader at Boardman Glenwood Middle School, won their individual school competitions and successfully completed a written qualifying exam to advance to the state level. A total of 100 pupils from across Ohio will participate. The state winner will advance to national competition May 23 and 24 in Washington, D.C. The bee is sponsored by JP Morgan Chase.
Open enrollment
BRISTOLVILLE -- Open-enrollment applications for the Bristol schools for the 2006-07 school are now being accepted at the high school, elementary or superintendent's office between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. weekdays. Bristol's policy is to open enrollment to all eligible pupils from anywhere in Ohio.
Diversity banquet
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State University will hold its 2006 Celebration of Diversity and Recognition Banquet at 5 p.m. Wednesday in the Chestnut Room of Kilcawley Center. Tickets are $5 for students and $15 for nonstudents. Mayor Jay Williams will be the keynote speaker, and the topic for the event will be, "A Vision For the Mahoning Valley As It Relates to the 2010 Project." Proceeds from the event will benefit the Youngstown State University Foundation Minority Scholarship Fund. Members of the student body who have served with various branches of the United States military will also be recognized. The banquet is sponsored by the Office of Student Diversity Programs, Partners for Workplace Diversity, the YSU Foundation, the Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity and the YSU Student Diversity Council. CANFIELD -- Registration has begun for the spring quarter of adult education classes at the Mahoning County Career & amp; Technical Center. In addition to the traditional Adult Basic Skills, English and GED classes, the center is offering a free "PROTECT -- Self Defense for Women" program in April. Suffrage program
MONACA, Pa.-- A discussion on the history of the women's suffrage movement in the United States, followed by a special showing of the film "Iron Jawed Angels" in the Student Union Building auditorium at 8 p.m., Tuesday will mark Women's History Month at Penn State Beaver. The event is free and open to the public and is sponsored by Beaver campus Diversity Activities. The movie recounts a key chapter in the struggle of suffragists who fought for the passage of the 19th Amendment to secure voting rights for women. Jailed for their protests, the women began a hunger-strike and resisted being force-fed, earning them the nickname of the Iron Jawed Angels. The movie features an array of well-known actresses, including Oscar winners Hilary Swank and Angelica Huston.
'Roberto Clemente Story'
BESSEMER, Pa. -- The Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera's Gallery of Heroes performance of " & iexcl;Arriba! & iexcl;Arriba! The Roberto Clemente Story" will be presented at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Mohawk Elementary School. The 50-minute musical performance illustrates the remarkable life and untimely death of one of Major League Baseball's most exceptional players who was also one of Pittsburgh's true heroes. The program is sponsored by Comcast Three Rivers Region and will be seen in more than 150 schools throughout Southwestern Pennsylvania now through May 5. Clemente, a Pittsburgh Pirate, died in a plane crash 34 years ago while delivering earthquake relief supplies to Nicaragua.
