WOOSTER
Expected to get a lot of playing time for the NCAA Division III pre-season top pick College of Wooster baseball team will be outfielder Dean Palombaro. He saw action in 25 of 48 games last season, which including nine starts. Two came in the NCAA Div. III World Series. Palombaro, a 5-foot-10, 190-pound junior and a native of Boardman, hit .263 (10-for-38) for the Fighting Scots. Four of hits, which included a double, came in nine plate appearances in the NCAA tournament. He also walked twice. The Fighting Scots, one of the top baseball programs in the country, are led by coach Tim Pettorini (761-294-6) in 24 years, which includes a league-record 10 North Coast Athletic Conference championships.
WINTHROP
Veteran baseball player Matt Repec started all 66 games Winthrop (44-22) last year. The 6-1, 195-pound shortstop heads into the 2006 campaign with a career .305 batting average. A three-year starter, he has competed in 183 straight games for the Eagles. During that span, he has 206 hits in 675 trips to the plate, which includes 38 doubles, 16 home runs and a 132 RBIs. The Eagles, who have won three Big South Conference titles in a row, made four NCAA tournament appearances and recorded five seasons with 40 or more wins, are led by Coach Joe Hudak (698-480-5) starting his 23rd season.
THIEL
Freshman Amber Bodrick, a Cardinal Mooney graduate, has been named to the Great Lakes D3hoops.com All-Region Division III All-Star basketball team. She lone freshman named to the Great Lakes Region team, she was also named to the All-Presidents' Athletic Conference first team. Bodrick led the PAC in rebounding 9.4 per game and was second in scoring (20.6). She also finished 13th among Div. I III counterparts in scoring average, while recording a PAC-best 14 double-doubles. Her 51-point effort in the Tomcats' 92-89 overtime victory against Bethany Jan. 25 was the highest-single game output by a women's basketball player at any NCAA level this season.
OHIO WESLEYAN
First-year coach Tom Durant has the Battling Bishops off to a 3-0 start. Michael Krieger is one of 19 lettermen back. The three-year letterman pitcher, a Boardman native, is back in the No. 1 spot in the Bishops' rotation. He has a career 15-8 record with a 4.72 ERA. Last year he posted a 6-1 record with a 4.72 ERA. He appeared in 13 games, nine starts, worked 61 innings, allowed only 62 hits, 32 earned runs and struck out 59.
MALONE
Joanna Genter, a Crestview High graduate, helped the Pioneers to a ninth place finish in the women's division at the NAIA Indoor National championships in Johnson City, Tenn. Genter earned All-American honors with a fifth place in 5000 meters in 17 minutes, 32.44 seconds. Others who competed for the Pioneers were Crestview High graduates Katie Bagley, 5000 (19:21.99); Rebekah Genter, 5000 (19:22.18); West Branch graduate Valerie Scott, 400 (60.7) and in the men's competition Jeremy Stauffer of Youngstown, 3000-meter walk (18:45.67).
GANNON
Sophomore shortstop Jaclyn Corroto, a Boardman native, is batting .360 for 18 games. She has 22 hits in 61 trips to the plate, which includes five home runs four doubles and 14 RBIs for the Knights (13-5). Senior first baseman Joanna Fergus, a Fitch High graduate, has appeared in 16 games for the Knights and is batting. 451. She has 23 hits in 51 at bats, which includes five doubles, four home runs and 10 RBIs.
WESTMINSTER
Senior Alex White, a native of Mineral Ridge, will be one of the top weight men during the outdoor track and field season. The Titans also boast one of the top throwers in school history in senior Sonya Cole, a Fitch High graduate. Westminster also has a pair of strong sprinters in senior Reese Robinson, a Lakeview high graduate and Seun Olarewaju, a Youngstown Christian graduate.
