DUI checkpoint nets several arrests, citations

BOARDMAN -- A team of 17 law enforcement officers from multiple jurisdictions made a multitude of arrests and citations at a Friday evening DUI checkpoint.
They stopped every one of 1,384 vehicles passing the checkpoint in a four-hour period.
The checkpoint was from 7 to 11 p.m. on St. Patrick's Day at Market Street and Overhill Road, and every vehicle on Market Street, both northbound and southbound, was stopped at least momentarily.
Of the vehicles stopped by the Mahoning County OVI (Operating a Vehicle Impaired) Task Force, 100 were directed to pull over into the diversion area.
The diverted vehicles yielded two adult DUI arrests, five citations for driving under license suspension, five for driving without a license, 69 for failure to wear seat belts; four misdemeanor arrests other than DUI and one felony marijuana arrest. Two vehicles were seized and towed away.
"Our main goal is to get the message out about the dangers of drinking and driving -- that we want people to designate sober drivers," said Tracy Styka, task force coordinator.
Sgts. Chuck Colucci and Glen Riddle, of the Canfield and Boardman police departments, respectively, commanded the checkpoint.
