Derby field will take shape after races today

NEW YORK (AP) -- By sundown today, the Kentucky Derby picture will be looking up for a bunch of 3-year-old thoroughbreds.
Just who those horses are will be determined at tracks in Arkansas, California, Florida and New York on the biggest day yet of Derby prep races.
"It's time to get into the deep end of the pool, and today it gets pretty deep," said trainer Richard Mandella, who sends out long shot Refinery in the San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif. "So we'll find out. It will tell us what we've got."
Right now, Brother Derek is considered the Derby favorite off victories in the San Rafael and the Santa Catalina, with his next start in the Santa Anita Derby on April 8. However, dozens of other 3-year-olds are ready to reveal whether they'll move forward on the road to the May 6 Derby.
Bluegrass Cat is a strong favorite to win his fifth straight race when he takes on eight rivals in the Tampa Bay Derby in Florida. Also entered were Little Cliff and Ice N Lemon, both trained by Nick Zito.
