YOUNGSTOWN -- Police are asking for the public's help in finding Yesenia Vazquez, 13, who disappeared from her South Side home Monday. Police said she apparently left her family's house at 144 High St. early. Her family didn't realize she was gone until her father went to awaken her for school. Guilty of taking bribes
YOUNGSTOWN -- Former bridge inspector Steven J. Koulianos, 41, of Buchanan Drive, Boardman, pleaded guilty Wednesday in Cleveland federal court to accepting bribes from painting contractors. He was released on $10,000 unsecured bond and will be sentenced July 11 by U.S. District Judge Christopher A. Boyko. The government said Koulianos took roughly $20,000 in cash from Argo Contracting and its representatives who wanted to improperly influence him from November 1999 through June 2000. Koulianos had been a bridge inspector with KTA Tator, a private company hired by the Ohio Department of Transportation to inspect work performed by bridge painting contractors on federally funded projects in Ohio, the government said.
Wake-A-Thon for charity
YOUNGSTOWN -- Ursuline High School students will sacrifice sleep for charity at the 17th annual Wake-A-Thon from 7:30 a.m. Saturday though 7 a.m. Sunday. More than 300 students will participate in the event, which already has raised more than $12,000 for the Rescue Mission, Beatitude House and the St. Vincent DePaul Society. The students also hope to collect other items to give to needy families through the three organizations. Activities at this year's event will include a talent show.
Tape checked in robbery
STRUTHERS -- City police are looking at the tape from the Circle K Store's video surveillance system in an attempt to identify the gunman who robbed the store late Tuesday. Police reports say a black man, possibly in his early 20s, entered the store at 311 Maplewood Ave. about 10:40 p.m. The thief grabbed an undisclosed amount of cash and ran out the door toward Fifth Street, police said.
Clerk hurt in robbery
ENON VALLEY, Pa. -- A man wearing a mask and brandishing a knife robbed D & amp;J Gas and Grocery on Pa. Route 551. Pennsylvania State Police said the robber confronted a clerk who was checking outside gas pumps and ordered her back into the store at 8 p.m. Wednesday. When she did not respond quickly enough, the man knocked her onto the pavement, where she hit her head. The robber forced the clerk into the building and took an undisclosed amount from the cash register.
Fire kills four horses
NORTH JACKSON -- It's believed that four of 20 horses perished in a barn fire at 3684 S. Bailey Road around 12:05 a.m. Thursday, said Jackson Township Fire Chief Wayne McDougal. He said the cause remains under investigation but noted that bales of hay behind the barn caught on fire. He doesn't suspect arson. Firefighters were able to save the riding arena attached to the barn. Jackson Township firefighters were aided by fire departments in Berlin Center, Ellsworth and Milton townships.
Niles man indicted
WARREN -- A Trumbull County grand jury indicted a 22-year-old Niles man Thursday for the rape of a Girard woman he knows. Jamil Moss of Woodglen Avenue is in county jail with bond set at $100,000. He will be arraigned today in common pleas court. Moss was indicted on three counts of rape and one count each of kidnapping with a gun specification, felonious assault with a gun specification and being a convicted felon with a weapon. Niles Police Chief Bruce Simeone said Moss persuaded the woman to meet him at his home to discuss money issues. The chief said Moss allegedly raped her three times during the evening and used two handguns to threaten her, keeping her in the house. The victim managed to run from the house and drive to Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital for treatment, Simeone said.
