Youngstown Early College receives grant

YOUNGSTOWN -- Chase bank has given Youngstown Early College a $10,000 grant to help fund various activities at the school located on the Youngstown State University campus.
"We're starting to get more donations," said Larry Johnson, YEC dean. "People are taking notice that we are offering unique educational opportunities to our students."
Chase, formerly known as Bank One, also announced donations to Wick Neighbors Inc., Forum Health Tod Children's Hospital and Junior Achievement of Mahoning Valley.
YEC, a partnership between YSU and the Youngstown City School District, is an innovative high school designed to help average students with demonstrated academic potential succeed in high school and transition to college. The program is open to ninth-graders from Youngstown.
Students in the school, which is the first of its kind on a public university campus in Ohio, take a combination of high school and college classes, graduating from high school with up to 60 hours of college credit.
The school, developed with the assistance of the KnowledgeWorks Foundation and the Bill & amp; Melinda Gates Foundation, opened in August 2004 and is housed in Fedor Hall.
