NFL ROUNDUP | News and notes
Seahawks: The NFC champions re-signed Rocky Bernard, who led them in sacks this season. Bernard had been one of the more widely sought defensive linemen on the market. The Seahawks also re-signed wide receiver and punt returner Peter Warrick, the fourth overall pick in the 2000 draft, who they picked up when he was cut last season by Cincinnati.
Dolphins: Miami confirmed that it obtained quarterback Daunte Culpepper from Minnesota in return for a second-round draft choice. The deal was made public Tuesday, but the Dolphins refused to confirm it until Culpepper, who is recovering from a serious knee injury, had taken a physical. "This is a big part of the puzzle," coach Nick Saban said.
Titans: Tennessee agreed to a six-year contract with free-agent safety Chris Hope, who started the last 32 regular-season games for Pittsburgh. He had a career-high three interceptions last season. "Pittsburgh was a great place," Hope said. "I was limited to just play in the middle of the field, but I have the ability to play either safety."
Saints: Aaron Brooks was cut the same day the team introduced Drew Brees as its new starting quarterback. Brooks' stay in New Orleans was effectively over after he endured his worst season in 2005, throwing for 13 touchdowns and 17 interceptions before being benched with three games remaining in the season. New Orleans finished 3-13. Brees is undaunted by New Orleans' recent struggles, and he has the track record to back up his confidence, from his college days at Purdue to his first five years in the NFL with San Diego. "It seems like at Purdue and then the Chargers and then to here -- it's kind of a situation where maybe they had a couple of rough seasons. The community was just craving that winner. And maybe there was a change, like a new coach, a new attitude and you're just able to step in and become a winner," Brees said. "That's what we did at Purdue and at San Diego, and now we plan on doing that here."
Giants: Free safety Will Demps, who played his first four seasons with Baltimore, was signed. Demps and newly signed veteran cornerback Sam Madison are likely to be starters for the NFC East champions, who earlier signed R.W. McQuarters and two other defensive backs to shore up what was one of the weakest secondaries in the NFL last season.
Eagles: One day after releasing Terrell Owens, Philadelphia seemed set to sign quarterback Jeff Garcia, the quarterback with whom Owens feuded in San Francisco. Garcia, who spent last season with Detroit, was in Philadelphia for a visit and a news conference was scheduled today.
Other moves: Pittsburgh re-signed defensive lineman Brett Keisel and backup tight end Jerame Tuman. Keisel will probably replace Kimo von Oelhoeffen, who signed with the New York Jets on Tuesday. ... Philadelphia re-signed Darnerian McCants, a journeyman wide receiver who was off and on its roster last season. ... Detroit re-signed backup running back Shawn Bryson, who had 37 receptions last season and rushed for 306 yards. ... Tight end Brian Jones signed his tender offer, keeping him with the Jacksonville Jaguars. ... The Green Bay Packers re-signed offensive tackle Kevin Barry and defensive lineman Kenny Peterson.
