GRAPEFRUIT LEAGUE ROUNDUP Wednesday's games
Indians 4, Blue Jays 3
DUNEDIN, Fla. -- Jake Westbrook tuned up for the regular season with four solid innings, Jhonny Peralta homered and Andy Marte drove in two more runs to lead Cleveland over Toronto. Relying on a cut-fastball that he added to his repertoire two years ago, Westbrook allowed one run and four hits. "I got a little tired, but I battled through it and that's what spring training is for," said Westbrook, who will make three or four more starts before opening day.
Peralta homered in the first inning off Toronto lefty Ted Lilly, who walked four in his third start of the spring. "My command needs some work and it starts with my fastball," said Lilly. "I'm confident it will be there at the end of the spring. I felt good, my endurance and arm strength were good. I just need more work."
Marte added a two-run double in the fourth inning for the Indians, who are planning to send the third baseman to Triple-A Buffalo to start the season. But if the 22-year-old, acquired in a Jan. 27 trade from Boston, keeps hitting like this he won't be in the minors for long. Marte is batting .385 with eight RBIs in 10 games. Of his 10 hits, six have gone for extra bases.
"He has and continues to make a strong impression on us," Indians manager Eric Wedge said. "He's had a good chance to play and he's making the most of it. Andy is definitely going to have his time."
Mike Mahoney had two hits and scored for the Blue Jays, who put the tying run on third with one out in the ninth. But Indians reliever Kaz Tadano worked out the jam for his second save.
Twins 5, Pirates 3
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Matt Garza gave up three hits but no runs in two innings for Minnesota. Garza struck out one and walked two.
Minnesota left fielder Shannon Stewart hit a two-run homer in the third inning, and designated hitter Rondell White slugged a solo home run in the fifth to power the Twins.
Twins shortstop Jason Bartlett hit a double that scored Ruben Sierra and Terry Tiffee in the fourth inning for a 4-0 lead.
The Pirates scored two runs in the fifth, on an RBI single by center fielder Nate McLouth and an RBI double by shortstop Gookie Dawkins. Pirates infielder Mike Edwards hit a solo home run in the ninth.
