Coast Guard search is now recovery effort

NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (AP) -- The Coast Guard called off its search Tuesday for three University of Rhode Island students who disappeared after taking a row boat out onto Narragansett Bay.
While officials did not declare the students dead, the rescue effort switched to a recovery effort Wednesday.
Daniel Donahue, 20, Geoffrey Wilkes, 18, and Fandia Shloul, 21, went missing early Monday.
The students launched the aluminum boat after a small party at a waterfront neighborhood just south of campus, which is closed for spring break. Their friends had discouraged them, authorities said.
The students were not believed to be wearing life jackets.
Rescuers searching the bay Monday found a partly submerged row boat more than 1,000 yards off shore along with an oar, a ball cap and a sandal in the 40-degree water.
