Workshop will target young women in grades 6-12
YOUNGSTOWN -- Young women in grades six through 12 will get a look at career opportunities in science and technology March 25 at the ninth annual Women in Science and Engineering Career Workshop at Youngstown State University.
Lynn M. Cavalier, senior vice president of human resources for FirstEnergy Service Co., will be the keynote speaker for the free program, which will run from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in Kilcawley Center.
Panel discussions, led by area women from varying careers, will be held during the morning, and hands-on activities and lab demonstrations on such topics as biology and environmental science, chemistry, engineering, forensics and physical therapy are slated for the afternoon.
The workshop is open to all middle and high school girls from Mahoning and Trumbull counties and western Pennsylvania. Students will attend two workshops and two demonstrations of their choice.
Parents can receive college planning and financial aid information and take campus tours while their daughters participate in the workshop.
The workshop also offers an essay competition with the winner receiving a $75 award from the Northeastern Ohio Chapter of the Association for Women in Science.

Cavalier began her career with Ohio Edison, which merged with Centerior Energy in 1997 to form FirstEnergy, and has held numerous engineering and administrative positions, including superintendent of a power plant and president of FirstEnergy's Eastern Region.
She was named to her current post in 2005. She holds a bachelor's degree in medical technology from Northwestern University and a bachelor's in engineering from the University of Akron.
