Grant co-player of year; Tondo first-teamer

COLUMBUS -- Tyra Grant of Ursuline High was named Division III co-player of the year, and McDonald's Ashleigh Tondo was selected to the first team in Div. IV, highlighting the area's representation on the Associated Press All-Ohio girls basketball teams.
Grant, a senior, averaged 30.8 points per game and led the Irish to the state semifinals starting Thursday.
A Penn State signee, Grant also averaged 10.7 rebounds, 3.7 steals, 2.9 assists and 2.8 blocked shots a game during the regular season.
She shared player of the year with Lauren Prochaska of Plain City Jonathan Alder and Carla Jacobs of South Euclid Regina.
Prochaska's numbers
Prochaska, a 5-11 junior, was good for 24.3 points, 8.4 rebounds, 5.3 steals and 1.8 assists a game while shooting 50 percent from the field, 36 percent on 3-pointers and 80 percent at the line.
Jacobs, a 5-7 senior who has signed to be a Cincinnati Bearcat next season, had stats of 18.9 points, 4.2 assists, 3.7 steals and 4.7 rebounds for the AP poll champions.
Also, Sean Durkin of Ursuline was named coach of the year.
Also named to the Div. III first team were Margaretta's Micki Kuns (5-11, sr., 16.2); Ashley Vavrek of Bellaire (5-8, sr., 28.0); Anna's Sarah Schulze (6-1, jr., 23.0); Keisa Davis of Oak Hill (5-8, sr., 17.0); Chantel Lavender of Cleveland Central Catholic (6-4, jr., 20.7); and Rachele Fitz of Garfield Heights Trinity (6-1, sr., 24.0).
Morgan Bonekovic of Brookfield and Crestview's Brianne Phillis were named special mention, while Ursuline's Vannessa Dickson, Springfield's Christy Warren, Elizabeth Ghindia of Champion, Emily Montgomery of Newton Falls and Samantha DiCello of East Palestine received honorable mention.
Tondo, a senior, led McDonald to a 19-1 season by averaging 20.8 points per game.
She was joined by Krista Johnson of Columbiana and Jasmine Richardson of Wellsville, who were named special mention, and honorable mention went to Kara Cooper of Youngstown Christian, Ashley Amabeli of Sebring, Kaitlyn McCarthy of Lowellville, Amy Dolsak of McDonald and Lauren Roscoe of Mathews.
Maria Stein Marion Local's Maria Moeller, Berlin Hiland's Lindsay Stuckey and Jennifer Grandy of Glouster Trimble were named players of the year in Div. IV.
OSU-bound
Moeller is a 5-7 senior who has signed to play next year for Jim Foster at Ohio State. She averaged 17 points, 5.7 assists and 4.3 steals a game this season after being named the most outstanding player at the state tournament as a freshman.
Stuckey (5-8, sr., 19.2) leads a powerful Hiland team (24-2) into Thursday afternoon's first state semifinal against Fort Loramie (24-2). East Canton (23-2) meets Hamler Patrick Henry (25-0) in the other game, with the winners deciding the title on Saturday.
Grandy, a 5-5 senior, hit for 30.9 points per game to finish with more than 2,500 career points, putting her securely in the top 10 all-time in Ohio in scoring.
The coach of the year was Will McKinney of Columbus Africentric.
Others on the first team were Alison Lemon of South Charleston Southeastern (5-7, sr., 24.8); Newark Catholic's Sarah Clapper (6-0, sr., 21.9); Melanie Williams of Willoughby Andrews School (5-9, jr., 25.8), and East Canton's Katy Arick (5-11, sr., 21.7).
