Coroner seeks causeof death of infant
NILES -- The Trumbull County coroner's office is attempting to determine the cause of death Monday of 8-week-old Chloe Greene at her Hyde Avenue home. A police report says her mother, Lauren Greene, fed the baby and put her in her bassinet about 11:30 a.m. About an hour later, a cousin and neighbor checked and found a blanket covering the infant's head. One of them gave the baby CPR while the other called 911. The fire department couldn't revive her. Greene was home at the time.
Grand jury to get case
YOUNGSTOWN -- The case against two inmates accused in the beating of a Mahoning County deputy sheriff will be directly presented to a Mahoning County grand jury, said City Prosecutor Jay Macejko. Michael A. Jones, 21, of Fourth Street, Struthers, is charged with felonious assault on a peace officer. Wayne A. Castle Jr., 25, of West Wood Street is charged with complicity to felonious assault. Jones is accused of grabbing Deputy Kevin Vivacqua's radio last Saturday night and hitting him in the head with it and also throwing scalding water on the deputy, the sheriff said. Vivacqua was treated for his injuries and sent home to recuperate.
Man arraigned in theft
YOUNGSTOWN -- Vernon L. Reed, accused of snatching a woman's purse near an entrance to Forum Health Northside Medical Center, was arraigned Tuesday in municipal court on an aggravated robbery charge. Judge Elizabeth A. Kobly set bond at $250,000 and a preliminary hearing for March 22. Reed, 33, of Ivanhoe Avenue, is under investigation for similar robberies, Bret Hartup, assistant city prosecutor, told the judge. In the past few weeks, at least three women were the victims of purse snatchings outside the hospital on Gypsy Lane, said Detective Sgt. Rick Alli. He said possibly two of the robberies took place in the hospital parking deck, which is in Liberty.
Unoccupied house burns
FARRELL, Pa. -- Firefighters are investigating a fire at a vacant home at 737 Fruit Ave. They were called at 8:52 p.m. Monday where smoke was billowing from a second-story window. The house, owned by James Rankin, had been vacant and had no utilities. Firefighters said there were rough weather conditions and they had trouble extinguishing the blaze.
Stolen truck recovered
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A dump truck stolen from Hubbard was found along Pa. Route 60. Pennsylvania State Police said they pulled the vehicle over at 9:30 Sunday when they saw it had no working lights. The driver and a passenger immediately ran off after stopping, police said. Police later learned the truck was stolen from Hubbard and an attached trailer with a bulldozer were stolen from Adams Township, Butler County. The value of both is about $80,000, police said.
Body found along tracks
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Pennsylvania State Police are probing the death of a Youngstown man found along the CSX Railroad tracks in North Beaver Township. The body of Rance R. Lund, 42, of Youngstown, was found at about 8 a.m. Tuesday. He was last seen Monday morning at a friend's Union Township home where he was staying. Police said Lund contacted another friend who told police Lund appeared despondent.
