NEW YORK -- Ilya Kovalchuk scored the tying goal late in regulation and Marc Savard added the winner 2:45 into overtime, lifting Atlanta to a comeback victory that sent New York to its fifth straight loss. New York, which lost 1-0 at Montreal on Saturday night, has scored just six goals in its longest skid of the season. The Rangers have earned two points during the slide, both in overtime losses this week to the Thrashers. Kovalchuk is tied for second in the NHL with 42 goals -- one more than his league-leading total in the 2003-04 season and two fewer than Jaromir Jagr, who gave the Rangers a 2-0 lead in the second period. Ronald Petrovicky also scored for Atlanta, three points behind eighth-place Montreal in the Eastern Conference playoff race. Martin Straka added a goal for New York.

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Maxim Afinogenov scored on a penalty shot and added two assists to help the Sabres extend their winning streak to six games. Thomas Vanek scored twice and set up another goal, and Ales Kotalik had a goal and two assists for the Sabres, 6-0 against Boston this season. Tim Connolly had a goal and assist, Derek Roy also scored and Martin Biron stopped 37 shots for the Sabres, who stayed two points behind Northeast Division-leading Ottawa. Andrew Alberts, with his first career goal, and Brad Boyes scored for Boston.

DENVER -- Peter Budaj stopped 33 shots for his first career shutout and Colorado moved into first place in the Northwest Division. The win moved Colorado a point ahead of the Flames, with the teams set to meet again tonight in Calgary. Budaj has won his first two starts since becoming Colorado's starting goalie when David Aebischer was traded to Montreal for Jose Theodore. Joe Sakic and Alex Tanguay each had a goal and an assist, and Milan Hejduk added a short-handed goal.

WASHINGTON -- Dany Heatley and Jason Spezza each had a goal and two assists for Ottawa, 7-0-1 in its last eight games with Washington. Wade Redden, Patrick Eaves and Chris Neil also scored for Ottawa, and Ray Emery made 25 saves. Chris Clark and Jamie Heward scored for Washington.

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Rob Niedermayer set up third-period goals by Samuel Pahlsson and Jeff Friesen, leading Anaheim. With Anaheim trailing 2-1, Niedermayer feathered a pass to Pahlsson off a 2-on-1 break to tie it 2-2. Less than a minute later, the Ducks broke into the Phoenix zone after the ensuing faceoff and Niedermayer moved the puck from behind the net to Friesen in the left circle. Friesen sent a wrist shot past goalie Philippe Suave for his first point since returning to Anaheim in a trade with Washington on Thursday.

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Brian Rolston and Pierre-Marc Bouchard combined for eight points and Minnesota rallied. Rolston scored twice and had two assists, and Bouchard scored the winner and assisted on Minnesota's other three goals. Dwayne Roloson had 26 saves against his former Wild teammates and is 0-3 since coming to Edmonton in a trade last week. Fernando Pisani gave the Oilers a 3-2 lead with a power play goal in the third period. But newly acquired Martin Skoula and Bouchard scored for the Wild, who pulled within five points of the Oilers in the race for the Western Conference's final playoff spot. Shawn Horcoff had a goal and two assists as well as a season-high three penalties for Edmonton.

CHICAGO -- Pavel Datsyuk and Mathieu Schneider each had a goal and two assists as Detroit captured its third straight win. Newly acquired defenseman Cory Cross, Brendan Shanahan and Henrik Zetterberg also scored for Detroit, which has won five of six and 11 of 13. The Red Wings built a 3-0 lead in the opening 6:57 and beat the Blackhawks for the sixth time this season and seventh in a row overall. The Blackhawks haven't defeated Detroit since Dec. 28, 2003. Chris Osgood made 17 saves as the Red Wings followed up a 6-4 victory Saturday night and swept the home-and-home series.
