Natural-gas threat leads to 2-block evacuation

YOUNGSTOWN -- City police and firefighters evacuated a two-block area of a South Side neighborhood because of the threat of a natural gas explosion.
Fire officials said a fallen tree created the hazardous condition during thunderstorms Monday night when it knocked down power lines and broke a gas line. Fire officials said a tree fell around 9 p.m. at 211 E. Dewey Ave., pulling down power lines that were sparking.
When firefighters arrived they discovered the tree also had broken a gas line.
Fire crews were still on the scene at press time.
