Schaff lecture speaker is theologian in NYC
There will be a workshop for clergy and lay leaders.
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Rev. Dr. Nora Tubbs Tisdale, consulting theologian at Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York City, will be the keynote speaker at 7 p.m. March 27 for the spring David S. Schaff lecture series at First Presbyterian Church, 201 Wick Ave. The event also will include a workshop and supper.
From 1993 to 2001, Tisdale taught preaching and worship at Princeton Theological Seminary, where she held the Elizabeth M. Engle Chair. She also served as an associate professor of preaching and worship at Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Va., from 1987-1993.
Tisdale currently serves as adjunct faculty at Union Theological Seminary in New York.
She attended Queens College in Charlotte, N.C., and earned a bachelor's degree in the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Tisdale also earned a degree in ministry at Union seminary and a doctorate at Princeton seminary.
Early in her ministerial career, she served as co-pastor with her husband, the Rev. Dr. W. Alfred Tisdale Jr., at an ecumenical parish of four churches in Virginia. She also was a missionary and taught at the Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Seoul, Korea.
From 1983 to 1991, Tisdale was one of three representatives from the Presbyterian Church of the USA to the Central Committee of the World Council of Churches. She has written five books and numerous articles.
Tisdale and her husband, who is pastor of Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church in New Jersey, have two adult children.

Registration will start at 3:30 p.m. with the workshop for clergy and lay leaders at 4 p.m. on the topic "Speaking Truth in Love: Strategies for Prophetic Proclamation." The workshop is free, but reservations are requested.
A catered buffet will be at 5:30 p.m. with meat and meatless options. Paid reservations of $10 must be made at the church office by March 23. No reservations are required for the lecture. For more information, call (330) 744-4307.
In her will, the late Mrs. Phillip H. (Jane Booth) Schaff provided for the completion of the endowment of the previously established David S. Schaff Lectureship at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. One stipulation was that one lecture be delivered in Youngstown.
Representatives of scholarship in the theological world visit the city annually to participate in this program that is open to people of all faiths. Historically, the lecture series has been sponsored locally by First Presbyterian Church along with Mahoning Valley Association of Churches, Eastminster Presbytery and the Diocese of Youngstown.
