Youngstown memberwins Indigo Shoot
Hunting Valley Gun Club took first place in the 56th annual Indigo Shoot, a winter skeet tournament involving five northeast Ohio clubs. Shooters from Middlefield-based Hunting Valley broke 1,167 targets to win club honors, outdistancing Youngstown Country Club, which finished second with 1,132. Paul Jagnow, shooting for Youngstown, won the individual championship, beating runner-up Peter Balunek of Hunting Valley 240-239. Using a shotgun, each participant tries to break 250 targets, 50 at each club, over the last weekend of February and the first weekend of March. In the 56 years no one has broken a perfect 250, given the usually inclement weather and varied locations. Jagnow's winning score earned him a wood-duck trophy at the awards dinner at the Blue Canyon Restaurant in Twinsburg. As first-place club, Hunting Valley takes possession of the rotating Indigo Cup. The tournament began in 1950 as a challenge from the Mentor Harbor Yachting Club to Hunting Valley for a late-winter interclub shoot. Besides the originating clubs, Hunting and Mentor, the Indigo now includes Youngstown, Hawthorne Valley Skeet Club of Parkman and The Country Club of Pepper Pike. Skeet is shot on a semicircular field in rounds of 25 targets, including singles and doubles. It was started in 1928 as off-season practice for upland-bird hunting but has since become a sport in its own right, totally independent of hunting. Both local and statewide matches are held regularly in Ohio, and national championships in San Antonio every October.

OHIO
Salt Fork repair project
COLUMBUS -- The multimillion-dollar repair project at Salt Fork Lake dam is nearing completion, and water in the 3,000-acre lake in Guernsey County will be allowed to rise to its normal level in the coming weeks. Recreation at the popular boating and fishing destination will resume as usual now that the dam's drainage system has been repaired, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Efforts to lower the lake level were initiated in March 2005, and the level was maintained at about 5 feet below normal to facilitate repairs on the dam. The repairs were necessary to replace a malfunctioning drainage system discovered in early 2005 in the quarter-mile-long earthen dam. Construction has now reached a point where normal lake levels will not affect further progress or the safety of the dam.
