EDINBORO, Pa. -- It didn't take long for Curtis Ingram of Youngstown to become a key player on the Edinboro (Pa.) University men's basketball team.
A transfer from Wofford in his first season with Edinboro, Ingram helped the Fighting Scots to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship and a berth in the NCAA Division II regional tournament.
A 6-foot-3 junior guard, who played at Cardinal Mooney High and then two seasons at Wofford (S.C.) College, scored the winning point in the conference title game.
Ingram made the second free throw after missing the first to give Edinboro a 52-51 win over Shippensburg last Saturday in the championship game of the PSAC tournament at West Chester University.
Second straight PSAC title
The win gave the Fighting Scots their second straight PSAC championship under veteran coach Greg Walcavich, becoming the first team to repeat as PSAC champions since Cheyney in 1982-83.
Walcavich, in his 15th season, became the first coach to repeat since John Chaney, now the Temple coach, led Cheyney to five straight titles from 1976-80.
Under Walcavich, Edinboro has qualified five times for the NCAA tournament.
The win also vaulted the Fighting Scots (21-9) into the Div. II tournament for the second straight year. Edinboro met West Virginia State (26-6) Saturday in the first round of the NCAA East Regional in Wilson, N.C.
Team's No. 3 scorer, rebounder
Ingram was Edinboro's third-leading scorer (13.2) and rebounder (5.3). He was 132-for-281 (47.0 percent) from the field, including 39-for-103 (37.9 percent) from 3-point range. He also is 54-for-73 (74.0 percent) at the foul line.
The team's leading scorer (18.2) and rebounder (9.5) is Daren Tielsch, a 6-foot-8 senior forward, while Torry Mitchell, a 5-10 senior guard, averages 13.9 points per game and leads in assists (122).
Ingram also named PSAC co-player of the week Feb. 21 after leading Edinboro to wins over Indiana (Pa.) and Lock Haven.
He scored 16 points with eight rebounds and three blocks in an 80-79 win over Indiana, then had career-highs of 27 points, 11 rebounds and five assists -- the first double-double of his career -- in the victory over Lock Haven.
