Ohio State may have to borrow money
COLUMBUS -- Ohio State's athletic department may have to borrow money from the university to cover NCAA penalties and the millions of dollars it could end up owing former men's basketball coach Jim O'Brien.
The NCAA on Friday ordered Ohio State to repay $800,000 in men's basketball tournament revenue from 1999 to 2002 for using an ineligible player. It must pay $530,000 right away and the rest will be taken from Ohio State's share of the conference's NCAA tournament revenue over the next three seasons.
The athletic department also could be forced to pay in excess of $6 million to O'Brien after a judge ruled last month that the university wrongfully fired him for loaning $6,000 of his own money to a recruit.
