CINCINNATI -- Stanley Burrell scored 22 points Wednesday, leading a long-range shooting attack that carried Xavier to a 75-66 victory over Massachusetts in the first round of the Atlantic 10 tournament.
Xavier (18-10) went 10-of-18 from behind the arc, scoring easily over the conference's stingiest 3-point defense. Burrell led the way, going 3-of-5 from behind the arc in a balanced offense that featured five players in double figures.
The Musketeers will play Charlotte, the tournament's No. 2 seed, today. They had a 78-65 victory at Charlotte on Jan. 14, before injuries sapped their lineup.
UMass (13-15) lost its opening game in the tournament for the fourth straight year, ending a season of inconsistency. James Life led the Minutemen with 25 points, and Stephane Lasme added 20.
Freshman point guard Johnny Wolf, who became the starter when senior Dedrick Finn was kicked off the team Feb. 22 for violating school policy, hit a pair of 3's from behind the NBA arc during the run that put Xavier ahead to stay.
Saint Joseph's 67, Dayton 55
CINCINNATI -- Guard Abdulai Jalloh scored 18 of his game-high 24 points in the second half, helping Saint Joseph's hold off Dayton.
Rob Ferguson scored 16 points and Chet Stachitas added 12 points for the Hawks (16-12), who will take a six-game winning streak into their second-round game against No. 4 seed Saint Louis today.
Jalloh went 13-of-14 on free throws, and also had a team-high eight rebounds.
Monty Scott led Dayton (14-17) with 13 points, and guard Warren Williams added 12 points. Guard Brian Roberts, the Flyers' leading scorer, was held to 2-of-14 shooting and finished with 11 points.
The Flyers lost three of their last four games overall.
The Flyers cut the lead to 42-41 with 12:02 left in the game, but Jalloh scored the Hawks' next five points to blunt the comeback. Dayton went 12-of-21 from the free throw line, making it difficult to catch up.
