2 robberies probed
YOUNGSTOWN -- City police are investigating two daylight robberies. An employee of Forum Health Northside Medical Center on Gypsy Lane told police that she was confronted outside a building entrance at the hospital and ordered to turn over her purse, which she did. She said the suspect implied he had a weapon in a pocket when he approached Tuesday morning. Police canvassed the area but didn't find the suspect, described as a black man about 25 years old, 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing 150 pounds. He was wearing a brown leather jacket and black stocking cap, reports show. Later in the day, a woman told police money was grabbed from her pocket as she stood at the bus stop in the 3600 block of Market Street. She described the suspect as black, 5 feet 8 inches, 150 pounds and wearing a black nylon coat and blue pants.
Sentencing rescheduled
WARREN -- Karen Delmont of Warren, who was found guilty of money laundering in the Trumbull County purchasing scheme, didn't appear for sentencing Wednesday. Rather than issuing an arrest warrant, Judge W. Wyatt McKay of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court rescheduled her sentencing for next Wednesday. Her lawyer Philip Vigorito said she may not have received notice of the date in court he had sent to her. She is the wife of Anthony Delmont, central figure in the scandal, who has been sentenced to three years in prison and fined $60,000. He is the county's former maintenance director. The scheme had the county paying exorbitant prices for supplies and services.
Boy found with BB gun
YOUNGSTOWN -- A search at Volney Rogers Junior High School turned up a BB gun in the book bag of a 14-year-old South Lakeview Avenue boy, police said. The boy was arrested on a charge of carrying a concealed weapon Tuesday.
Video equipment found
YOUNGSTOWN -- A Hilton Avenue mother found video equipment in her son's room with school labels for Alpha School for Boys on Hillman Street, and the principal retrieved the items Tuesday. The boy said he took the items from the school library and carried them home in his gym bag. The boy was suspended for 10 days and will be prosecuted for theft, police said.
Campbell Relay for Life
YOUNGSTOWN -- Campbell International Relay for Life committee and team captains will meet at 5 p.m. Monday to further discuss the relay event, sponsored by the American Cancer Society, on June 23-24 at Roosevelt Park in Campbell. The meeting will be at Organizacion Civica y Cultural Hispana Americana, 3660 Shirley Road. Co-chairmen are Rita Lopez and Will Pacheco.
Sports-card scam
YOUNGSTOWN -- The police department's detective division has been flooded with complaints that allege a city couple perpetrated a scam on eBay that involves sports cards. Complaints came from Iowa, South Carolina, Illinois, California, Pennsylvania, Canada, Jamaica and other areas. The callers have been told the case will be handled by the FBI. The Vindicator received a call from an Iowa woman who identified the couple and said they lived on San Pedro Drive. The woman who lives at the San Pedro address filed a police report Tuesday that describes identity theft. She told police that after her boyfriend moved out, she discovered property missing, including a computer and credit cards, reports show.
New campaign manager
YOUNGSTOWN -- State Sen. Charles A. Wilson Jr., a Democratic write-in candidate for the 6th Congressional District seat, hired Jason Burke, who's worked on congressional campaigns in four states, as his campaign manager. Burke replaces Wilson's son, Jason, who was removed from the post after the campaign failed to get enough valid signatures on nominating petitions to have the older Wilson's name on the May primary ballot. Burke has worked on campaigns in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, New Jersey and Texas.
Tractor, mower stolen
AUSTINTOWN -- Police said someone broke into the clubhouse at Champs Field at 600 N. Raccoon Road and stole a blue Ford 1450 tractor with a front-end loader and a brush hog mower attached. The theft occurred between Sunday and Wednesday, police said. The equipment is owned by Austintown Community Baseball, police said.
