YOUNGSTOWN STATE UNIVERSITY Italian Contest at Kilcawley Center to feature poetry by area pupils
YOUNGSTOWN -- Elementary and high school pupils from throughout the Mahoning and Shenango valleys will take part in the 27th annual Italian Contest on Saturday at Youngstown State University.
The event, sponsored by the greater Youngstown chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Italian and the YSU Foreign Language Department, will run from 8:30 a.m. to noon in Kilcawley Center.
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., and the competition starts at 9:15.
Each elementary school participant is required to memorize a poem in Italian, and each high school contestant is required to memorize a poem and recite a selection of prose, both in Italian.
The judges will not know the names of the pupils or their school affiliations. Each contestant will be identified by number only.
For the poem, the contestant is judged on memorization, pronunciation and interpretation. For the selection of prose, the contestant is judged on pronunciation, presentation and interpretation.
