AUSTINTOWN -- A woman charged with falsification over a report she had filed saying that a township police officer forced sex on her and hit her pleaded innocent in Mahoning County Court here. Charmin Merchant, 34, appeared for arraignment Monday. She was arrested March 1 at her home in Amanda, Ohio. Police said Merchant lied when she told them the officer with whom she had had a relationship forced sex on her and hit her Feb. 14.
Driver dies of injuries
MERCER, Pa. -- A Greenville woman died in a one-car crash on Pa. Route 318 near Greenfield Road. Pennsylvania State Police said Mary Ann Goss, 53, was traveling west at 12:12 p.m. Monday when her 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee left the road and crashed into a tree. She was flown to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown and died at the hospital, police said.
3rd Ward meeting
WARREN -- Councilman Andrew Barkley, D-3rd, will conduct a public meeting to hear the concerns of 3rd Ward residents from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Garfield Elementary School gymnasium, 2747 Montclair St. N.E.
Fair to add categories
CANFIELD -- The Canfield Fair's Arts and Crafts Department will have additional exhibit categories for the 2006 fair.
Fair officials said the new categories will be: Origami "A Visit to the Tropics," painting on porcelain, additional categories of scrapbooking, button art, cooking with cheese, Silver Spoon fruitcake, the national Hidden Valley contest, and a quilt made entirely by hand.
Those who entered in Arts and Crafts in 2005 will be sent a 2006 entry book. Others may receive one by calling the fair office at (330) 533-4107, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, before March 20.
Man hurt on the job
HUBBARD -- A 48-year-old Masury man remained in critical condition in St. Elizabeth Health Center Monday night after an industrial accident at Warren Fabricating Corp., 7845 Chestnut Ridge Road, Hubbard Township. According to the police report, Richard A. Malcomson, of Owsley Street, was welding about 7 p.m. Saturday while standing on a platform when it gave way. Malcomson fell about 25 feet.
Officers to be elected
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Tri-State Detachment of the Marine Corps league will conduct nominations and election of officers at its meeting today at 7 p.m. at ITAM Post 3, 115 S. Meridian Road.
Yavorcik exits race
YOUNGSTOWN -- Atty. Marty Yavorcik of Youngstown has withdrawn as a Democratic candidate for a seat on the 7th District Court of Appeals.
Yavorcik's withdrawal leaves Atty. Timothy Franken of Beaver Township, an assistant Mahoning County prosecutor; and Atty. Christopher Sammarone as the only two Democrats running in the May 2 primary. The winner faces Appellate Judge Mary DeGenaro of Poland, a Republican seeking her second six-year term on the court, in the November general election.
Meeting rescheduled
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown City Council has canceled its March 15 meeting and rescheduled it for 5:30 p.m. March 22 in council chambers on the sixth floor of city hall.
