COLLEGE HOOPS | Monday's Top 25 games
WOMEN
West Virginia 56, No. 6 Rutgers 40
HARTFORD, Conn. -- West Virginia's surprising postseason run continues with perhaps the biggest stunner of all. Britney Davis-White had a career-high 21 points and Chakhia Cole added 18 to help the 12th-seeded Mountaineers stun top-seed Rutgers in the Big East tournament semifinal. The Mountaineers (15-15) are the lowest seed to reach the tournament finals in its 23-year history. The Scarlet Knights (25-4) have won the last two regular season titles and were aiming for their first tournament title. But the scrappy Mountaineers foiled those plans with their third upset in as many days and held Rutgers, which was undefeated in the conference for the first time in school history, to a season-low 40 points.
No. 18 Temple 59, George Washington 54
PHILADELPHIA -- Candice Dupree scored 25 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and was named the Atlantic 10 tournament's Most Outstanding Player for the third straight season in Temple's victory over George Washington in the title game. After making the NCAA tournament only once in team history entering this decade, Owls coach Dawn Staley has led the program to unprecedented success. The Owls (24-7) are in the NCAA tournament for the third straight year and fourth time in the last five seasons. Staley's first season in 2000-01 was the only one without postseason play. Kimberly Beck scored 21 points for the top-seeded Colonials (22-8).
No. 9 Connecticut 69, No. 13 DePaul 57
HARTFORD, Conn. -- Barbara Turner scored 14 points and Ann Strother added 13 to lead Connecticut to a 69-57 win over DePaul in the semifinals of the Big East Conference tournament. The second-seeded Huskies (28-4), winners of 12 Big East tournament titles, took control in the final 7 minutes with smothering defense and clutch baskets and rebounds from Turner. UConn will play 12th-seeded West Virginia in tonight's final. The Mountaineers, seeking their first title, became the lowest seed to reach the championship game in 23 years with their 56-40 upset over top-seeded Rutgers in the first semifinal. The 13th-ranked Blue Demons (25-6), one of five former Conference USA members to join the Big East this season, haven't won a conference tournament since the 1998 Great Midwest title.
