CENTRAL HOCKEY LEAGUE SteelHounds loss skid hits seven
Youngstown blew several leads before fallling 8-6 to Memphis.
SOUTHHAVEN, Miss. -- The Youngstown SteelHounds had several leads, including a couple of two-goal cushions, but ran out of gas in the third period. Memphisscored three third period goals to win 8-6 in a Central Hockey League game Saturday.
Brad Wanchulak netted his first hat trick for the SteelHounds (20-32-5), while Jeff Christian scored two goals with an assist. But Youngstown's winless streak reached seven games (0-5-2).
Youngstown's Joey Sewell scored his 18th goal of the season just 49 seconds into the first period but that was answered by the RiverKings' Dorian Anneck.
The SteelHounds answered with Matt Hanson taking a face-off win and making a great effort to get to the front of the net and lift a shot over Memphis goalie Guy St. Vincent for his ninth goal of the season.
But, the RiverKings (20-30-3) responded just over a minute later with Brad Wanchulak scoring his first goal of the season. Christian made it 3-2 with his 48th goal on an assist by Darryl Lloyd was credited with his second assist of the night.
SteelHounds led 4-2
Lloyd gave Youngstown a 4-2 lead with his 15th goal of the season at 4:19 of the second period. Memphis answered with a power play goal by Darrell Stoddard, but the SteelHounds scored with a man advantage to make it 5-3. Sewell scored his 19th goal of the season, assisted by Chris Richards and Christian, at the 9:58 mark.
The assist for Richards extended his point streak to 17 straight games, a career high and tied for the longest in the CHL this season.
Memphis scored twice in a row to tie the score at 5, but shortly afterwards Christian scored his 49th goal of the season at 18:06, assisted by Sewell and Richards.
The RiverKings tied the score 4:09 into the third period on a goal by Wanchulak, his third of the night. Memphis then took the lead on Travis Banga's team-leading 27th goal of the season and Chad McIver finished the scoring with an empty-net goal, his third of the season.
Both teams took 30 shots on goal with the goaltenders struggling. Memphis' Guy St. Vincent won his second straight decision making 24 saves and the 'Hounds Simon St. Pierre took the loss, stopping 22 shots.
The Hounds continue their final road trip of the season Friday night against the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs at 8:05 p.m.
