In 1868, the Senate is organized into a Court of Impeachment to decide charges against President Andrew Johnson. In 1953, Soviet dictator Josef Stalin dies at age 73 after 29 years in power. In 1963, country music performers Patsy Cline, "Cowboy" Copas and "Hawkshaw" Hawkins die in a plane crash near Camden, Tenn. March 5, 1981: Unemployment reaches a post-Depression record of 15.4 percent during January in the Youngstown-Warren area. The news comes as General Motors announces plans to lay off about 1,700 workers for a week from its Lordstown plant.
Gasoline prices increased by 7 to 9 cents per gallon in the Youngstown-Warren area in February, with regular selling at $1.35 a gallon at full serve stations, $1.26 at self-serve pumps.

March 5, 1956: Mrs. James Carmody of 57 Liberty St., Girard, reports she gets two or three calls nearly every day from someone trying to reach the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. The Carmody's number, Liberty 5-6700 is the same as that of the Pentagon, and apparently some callers are misdialing the "foreign area code" that can be used to direct-dial long-distance calls.
The old Stitzinger house at Lincoln Avenue and Rhodes Place will be razed to make way for construction of a gymnasium addition to New Castle High School.
March 5, 1931: Youngstown Superintendent J.J. Richeson says the teacher load at city schools will increase from 37 to 40 students per teacher as staff cuts are made to balance the budget. A plan is also being formulated to combine some principalships.
W.L. Buchanan, president of Youngstown City Council, tells the West Side Improvement Club that the city should take over the gas and power distribution system of the Ohio Edison Co. and the East Ohio Gas Co.
