VINDICATOR STAFF REPORT
COLUMBUS -- Tony Jameson and Andy Lamancusa achieved perfection Saturday night at the Ohio High School state wrestling championships, and Nathan Sharp delivered one of the most exciting performances.
Jameson, the 119-pound sophomore from Austintown Fitch High, and Lamancusa, the 145-pound senior from West Branch, won individual titles at Value City Arena, completing unblemished seasons.
Sharp, Lamancusa's teammate, completed a 37-1 season and gained a measure of revenge while winning the 275-pound title.
Jameson won the Division I 119-pound title with a pin in 1 minute, 4 seconds of rival Dante Rini of Massillon Jackson.
Unbeaten records
Jameson, the 103-pound champion as a freshman, completed his season with a 42-0 record and is 70-3 over two seasons.
Lamancusa, in Div. II, rounded out a 40-0 season by winning an 11-9 decision over Robbie Michaels of Clyde in the championship match.
Lamancusa, who finished third last year at 140 pounds, is 80-1 over the last two seasons. His only loss in that span was to the eventual champion at 140 last year in the state semifinals.
Michaels, rated third by the Brakeman Report, was 39-0 before losing to Lamancusa, the projected state champion.
Sharp stops Guhn
Sharp handed Clyde's Matt Guhn his first loss in over two years in the 275-pound championship match, 5-4. Guhn, rated No. 1 in the Brakeman Report, was 96-0 as a junior and senior until Saturday night.
The bout was a rematch of last year's state final in which Guhn won by pin after Sharp suffered a knee injury midway through the match.
The area's two state finalists in Div. III finished as runners-up.
Brookfield's Tristan Thompson, a junior, was pinned in the 119-pound final by Bryce Freeman of Burton Berkshire, in 2:52.
Thompson, rated No. 7 in the state by the Brakeman Report, finished his season with a 47-4 record. Freeman, rated No. 2 at 112 by Brakeman, finished 42-3.
Skaggs loses in final
At 135 pounds, Jackson-Milton's Joe Skaggs was one of the most unexpected finalists, starting the weekend with 11 losses.
But the sophomore, ranked No. 17 by Brakeman, won three matches impressively before falling to Bellaire St. John's Joe Skoff, 7-1, in the final.
Skaggs finished his season with a 37-12 record while Skoff, rated third in the Brakeman Report, improved to 42-1.
Seven other area wrestlers made it to the awards podium Saturday night.
Bodnar, Powell third
Fitch's Nick Bodnar and Boardman's Justin Powell both finished third in their Div. I weight classes, each winning two matches Saturday.
At 140, Bodnar (41-5) defeated Adam Vaccari of Hilliard Davidson, 7-2, then decisioned Tommy Weinkman of Cincinnati Moeller, 4-1, in the third-place match.
At 215, Powell (41-2) decisioned Anthony Watson of Sandusky 5-0 in the consolation semifinals, before pinning Howland's Kyle Gantz in 4:25 in the third-place match.
Earlier, Gantz (36-8) won a major decision over Wadsworth's Dave Crowley, 12-2, to advance.
Also placing third was Southeast's Joe Knopick, at 189 pounds in Div. II. Knopick decisioned Mitch Knapp of McConnelsville Morgan, 4-2 in overtime, then defeated Sandusky Perkins' Matt Fisher 4-3 for third place. Knopick, a senior, finished with a 40-4 record.
Caudill eighth, Mascioli sixth
Also in Div. II, Beaver Local senior Derek Caudill finished eighth at 130 pounds, losing his only Saturday match to Aurora's Arthur Miller, 7-5. Caudill finished the season with a 37-6 record.
In Div. III, Jackson-Milton's Matt Mascioli (39-10) finished sixth at 112. He lost in the consolation semifinals by pin (2:01) to Matt Reynolds of Marion Pleasant, then lost by technical fall to Jon Gulley of Lewisburg Tri-County North, 21-5.
Ross Tice (43-7) of Brookfield finished seventh at 152, pinning Andy Schmidt of Coldwater in 1:20.
Lakewood St. Edward won its 10th straight title in Div. I, and its 22nd overall, while St. Paris Graham won its sixth consecutive championship in Division II. Sandusky St. Mary took its fifth in a row in Division III.
