Tanker of butane flips on I-77; homes evacuated
BOLIVAR, Ohio (AP) --Residents evacuated after a tanker truck crash on Interstate 77 in northeast Ohio were allowed to return to their homes early Saturday, authorities said.
There was no spill, but people were asked to leave their homes in sparsely populated Pike Township and Bethlehem Township as a precaution within a half-mile radius of a tanker truck carrying butane that flipped over Friday afternoon, a patrol dispatcher said.
The driver died after the truck hit a guardrail about 3:30 p.m. Friday and flipped over, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said. The driver's name was not released.
It was not clear how much butane, a flammable and highly explosive fuel used in cigarette lighters, was in the tanker.
About three miles of northbound Interstate 77 in Stark County were closed until further notice.
