YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown-Warren Ohio Black Nurses Association has scholarship assistance available for students in an accredited nursing program. Applicants must be a black person living in Mahoning or Trumbull counties and have at least a 2.0 grade point average. Deadline for applying is March 31. Scholarship available
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Trustees of the UPMC Horizon Medical Staff Scholarship Fund are accepting applications from local medical school students through April 15 for their annual scholarship. Since 1969, physicians in Greenville have been contributing income from school examinations into a scholarship fund. This money, along with contributions from the UPMC Horizon medical staff, is used to provide scholarships to medical students from the local area. Open enrollment
HOWLAND -- Howland schools will accept applications for open enrollment for the 2006-07 school year from 8 to 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 to 3 p.m. March 13 through March 17, at the superintendent's office adjacent to the middle school, 8200 South St., where they can be obtained by a parent or guardian. Kindergarten and fifth grade are closed, and no applications will be accepted.
Safety poster contest
COLUMBUS -- The Ohio Committee for Severe Weather Awareness is looking for entries for its 2006 safety poster contest. Schoolchildren in first through sixth grades are encouraged to submit their drawings illustrating how to prepare for and protect oneself from the severe weather that affects Ohio. Posters are to be submitted through pupils' home schools. The deadline is April 17. Katie Fernstrom, now a sixth-grader at Canfield Middle School, was the overall state winner in the 2005 contest. March 26-April 1 is Severe Weather Awareness Week in Ohio, with a statewide tornado drill scheduled for 9:50 a.m. March 29.
Trumbull's top spellers
WARREN -- Abbey Shimko from East Middle School in the Warren City School District won the Trumbull County Educational Service Center's annual Trumbull County Spelling Bee. Sarah Benich from Lakeview Middle School was the runner-up. A total of 47 pupils representing 20 school districts participated in the contest, which is co-sponsored by the Regional Chamber. The remaining top 10 spellers, in order of finish were: Lauren Misik, Niles City Schools' Lincoln Elementary; Derek Koncsol, Howland Middle School; Clayton White, Warren City Schools' Turner Middle School; Melissa Wasser, McDonald High School; Sarah Miksit, Bristol High School; Camille Smith, Girard Intermediate School; Hallie R. Baugher, Southington Elementary School; and Joshua Murphy, Brookfield Middle School. This spelling bee provided participants with the opportunity to prepare for the annual contests sponsored by the Tribune Chronicle of Warren and The Vindicator.

Workshop on fund raising
YOUNGSTOWN -- Entertainment Publications of Boardman will show area elementary schools and parent groups how to raise money for their programs. The agency will have a One for the Community workshop from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 15 at the Chevrolet Centre on Front Street. The program is designed to give school principals and parent-teacher organizations advice on the subject of fund raising.
Ursuline Education Day
