Pastor of Holy Name Church, Rev. Reiss, retires from position



YOUNGSTOWN -- The Rev. John Reiss retired Wednesday as pastor of Holy Name Church.
Father Reiss was ordained May 24, 1969, as a Franciscan priest and served parishes in New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois and Sorota, Bolivia. He also has been a retreat master, high school chaplain and guidance counselor.
In the Diocese of Youngstown, Father Reiss was a religion teacher at Cardinal Mooney High School and provided weekend pastoral assistance at various parishes before being named pastor at Our Lady of Hungary Church and Holy Name.
Monsignor Peter Polando has accepted the appointment as administrator of Holy Name in addition to his pastorate at St. Matthias Church in Youngstown and adjutant judicial vicar in the Diocesan Tribunal.
Monsignor Polando was ordained June 21, 1980, and served as an associate pastor at St. Mary Church in Massillon. He was on the faculty at Cardinal Mooney, where he also was an associate principal.
Before his assignment at St. Matthias, he was pastor at St. Joseph and St. Mary churches in Newton Falls.
Monsignor Polando is a member of the Diocesan Finance Council and the Board of Mediation and Arbitration for the diocesan Office of Conciliation.
In 1997, he was named a Chaplain of His Holiness by Pope John Paul II.
