'Hounds are beaten, 3-2, in shootout duel
Youngstown has a 3-3 record in shootouts this season.
SOUTHHAVEN, Miss. -- The Youngstown SteelHounds ice hockey team battled hard against the Memphis RiverKings Friday before losing 3-2 in a shootout.
Derek Landmesser scored the game winner in the shootout and added an assist as Memphis (19-30-3) ended their 10-game winless streak and extended the SteelHounds' winless slide to six straight games (0-4-2).
Joey Sewell scored a goal and had an assist for Youngstown while David St. Germain made 45 saves at the DeSoto Civic Center.
The shootout loss marked the third consecutive road game that Youngstown (20-31-5) has had to work overtime winning in a shootout in Fort Worth and dropping a shootout in Rio Grande.
This season, the Hounds are 3-3 in shootouts.
Sewell scores 17th
Sewell's 17th goal of the season and 15th in 15 games with the SteelHounds put Youngstown ahead, 1-0, at the 3:49 mark of the first period.
Matt Hanson and Jeff Christian assisted. Christian is second in the Central Hockey league with 88 points.
The RiverKings took advantage of a major penalty early in the second period, tying the game 1-1 on a goal by Ryan Campbell, his 21st goal of the season. Peter Robertson and Landmesser assisted.
A shorthanded goal at the 8:45 mark put the River Kings ahead, 2-1, with Campbell netting his second goal. Tim Plett and Robertson assisted.
Christian ties it
Chris Richards' first goal since Feb. 4 tied the game in regulation to create the five-minute overtime.
Sewell assisted on Richards' 16th goal of the season that extended his point streak to 16 straight games.
But the two teams went scoreless in the extra session to set up the shootout.
In the shootout, Sewell and Darryl Lloyd scored for Youngstown but in the last round of shooting, Landmesser scored the game-winner.
Memphis outshot the Hounds 48-33 .
Tonight, the SteelHounds continue their final road trip of the season with the re-match versus the RiverKings.
Notes
Christian has points in 15 of his last 16 games (11-18=29). Sewell is on a five-game goal scoring streak (six goals over that stretch).
Hanson has four goals and an assist in his last six games. St. Germain set a new career high playing in his 46th game of the season.
Kelly Sickavish returned to the ice after missing his first game of the season Wednesday due to an injury.
