CHURCH HISTORY \ Through the years



1956: Boardman Baptist Church, first known as Boardman Baptist Temple, was formed March 4, 1956. The Rev. Ben Sherman was the first pastor to officiate at the first Sunday worship service at Stadium Drive School, Boardman. In April, the congregation moved to the Sheban Building and four months later to Princeton Junior High School in Youngstown. A church constitution was adopted and church officers were elected.
1957: The site of the church at 1207 Shields Road, Boardman, was chosen in July. On July 28, 1959, construction of the church began on a nearly eight-acre parcel. Though the church was not completed by Christmas that year, services were held.
1960: Dedication service held April 24.
1972: In June, the congregation made the last payment and a mortgage-burning service took place June 18.
1973: The church approved a remodeling program with carpeting in the sanctuary and foyer, new pews and air conditioning.
1986: A children's choir is formed and a vacation Bible school is started.
1988: A contract is signed to give the church free gas from a well on the property. A women's fellowship is formed and sponsors a mother and daughter banquet and holiday dinners, supports missionaries and makes comfort items for children's and nursing homes. A men's fellowship is organized along with a Bible fun club for young people.
1990: Ministry geared to older members, the ill, bereaved and needy is undertaken by church members.
1992: The congregation votes to change the name from Boardman Baptist Temple to Boardman Baptist Church.
1996-2006: Activities started included adult choir, children's church, Bible Club and Christmas cantata. Sunday school classes were restarted and the nursery was updated. In and around the building, projects completed included installation of fluorescent lighting throughout classrooms, replacement of air conditioning in sanctuary and classrooms, expanded and resurfaced parking lot, refurbished baptismal area, updated landscaping, updated sound system and computers.
