Boy charged after knife is found at school

POLAND -- A student charged with a felony over having a knife in school has been suspended, schools Superintendent Robert Zorn said Thursday.
The 15-year-old Seminary High School student said he did not mean to bring the knife to school, Zorn said, but federal law requires that action be taken if a weapon is taken onto school grounds. He said the boy received a five- to 10-day suspension.
The knife was found Monday at 1:30 p.m., according to Poland Township police reports.
Zorn said the knife was found in the student's backpack by another student, who reported it to the principal's office.
The student said the knife was in his backpack because he'd taken it on a weekend activity and then he forgot it was there, Zorn said.
The police report described the knife as stainless steel and seven inches long. The student is charged with illegal conveyance or possession of a deadly weapon, a fifth-degree felony. He was released to his father.
Police Chief Brian Goodin said the department's charge is "face-value."
"Any time you bring any kind of weapon onto school grounds, it's a felony," he said.
Goodin said the police presented the case to juvenile prosecutors for review, and it will be up to prosecutors if they want to make any modifications in the charge.
