Symphony presentsannual chef cook-off
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Greenville Symphony Orchestra will present its annual Brass Chef Cook-Off at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Lutheran Heritage Room in the Howard Miller Student Center on the campus of Thiel College. The fund-raiser is for the benefit of the symphony.
Chef Rick Bruckner is back to defend his title. His worthy opposition is Chef Henry Norman. The master of ceremonies for the event will be the Greenville Symphony Orchestra's conductor, Dr. Michael Gelfand. Judging this year's event are Nancy Wardle of Sparkle Markets; Bob Popa, WPIC radio personality; and Dr. Lance Masters, president and chief executive officer of Thiel College. The fourth judge will be selected from the audience by auction.
Maestro Michael Gelfand's baton will also be auctioned. The winner of the baton will then become the conductor for the opening piece at the fall concert of the 2006-2007 season.
A Chinese auction will start at 7 p.m., and a number of local restaurants are providing appetizers and refreshments for this bring-your-own-bottle event.
Springsteen on PBS
KENT -- PBS 45/49 presents the new televised production of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band's legendary 1975 concert at the Hammersmith Odeon in London. "Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band: Hammersmith Odeon, London '75" airs at 9:30 p.m. March 13.
PBS digitally restored the footage in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the concert, which was held during the band's tour in support of the landmark album "Born to Run." Released exclusively to PBS affiliates in November 2005, this is the first time that the special airs in the PBS 45/49 viewing area.
Airing as a March pledge special, the program offers viewers the opportunity to choose Springsteen audio and video merchandise at several membership levels. A Springsteen anniversary package, available at the $180 pledge level, includes DVDs of the Hammersmith Odeon concert and "Wings for Wheels: The Making of Born to Run," plus two CDs: "Born to Run 30th Anniversary" and, exclusive to PBS, "Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band." Two other membership levels offer Springsteen CD sets and CDs.
Orbison exhibit
CLEVELAND -- Roy Orbison was one of the pioneers of rock 'n' roll. In celebration of his legacy, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum will open an exhibit April 18 that highlights different aspects of his career and personal life. Orbison was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.
The exhibit coincides with the release of Legacy Records Roy Orbison Reissue Project. The first Legacy release will be "Black & amp; White Night," the 1987 concert originally aired as an HBO-Cinemax special, and the long-awaited "The Essential Roy Orbison," the first "best of" collection spanning Orbison's entire career.
