Joseph's Supermarket closes in New Castle
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Joseph's Supermarket marked its last day at 20 E. Lawrence Ave. on Tuesday.
The store, owned by brothers Dennis and George Joseph, is moving. The brothers said they are selling the property and plan to have items there auctioned off within the next month. They have not announced the store's new location.
The Hometown Pharmacy, also located at Joseph's, is moving to a new building behind the store. Earlier this week, the brothers said it's time for a newer, more updated building.
Joseph's was the city's only downtown market and was part of a 90-year-old family-operated business.
Moowin Joseph, the brothers' grandfather, started Joseph's on Long Avenue in 1915.
The brothers said that the store is known as one of the city's first self-serve markets with a parking lot. The downtown site opened in 1956. The two stores, along with one on Wilmington Road, operated through the 1960s.
Dennis and George Joseph took over the store's operations more than 20 years ago.
